Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Did DC just love the zoo/aquarium the first time?

We're taking her to her first zoo or aquarium (depending on the weather)tomorrow for her birthday and I know mom and dad couldn't be more excited lol. Just wondering if DCs tend to also love it at this age? She loves all things bird, dog, and cat so I'm hoping yes!!

Re: Did DC just love the zoo/aquarium the first time?

  • We took DS last weekend.  He wasn't as excited as I hoped he would be.  I think part of it was that the animals were too far away for him to care about them.  He loves Petsmart and our dog, so I thought he'd enjoy it.  I guess we'll try again in the fall and see how he does.

  • We took DD on Mothers Day and she was more excited to see all the people and say hi than looking at animals.
  • I took DD to the zoo for her birthday.  She really just wanted to get out of her stroller and explore.  Thankfully, we were in Seattle and their zoo has a "zoonasium" area for 0-3 where they can crawl around and climb on things.  We spent more time in there than actually looking at the animals.  I wish the Atlanta zoo had that option because I really want to go before it gets too hot, but I'm not sure how it will go.
  • We've done both the zoo and aquarium and I'd like to think Morgan was excited! The aquarium we just did this week for DH's birthday and she was definitely jumping up and down and getting excited at seeing the fish. She's in a waving phase at the moment so she wanted to wave at all the animals, even the sharks

I think it's just fun letting them try new experiences at this age and if she already loves animals I'm sure she'll be fine!

  • Yes! I took her for the first time when my mom was in town at 9 months, and she looked at *everything*. Totally fascinated, and the monkeys made her giggle. My mom said she thought I was crazy thinking that such a young baby would be entertained by a trip to the zoo, but she really was.

We got a zoo membership b/c of how much she liked it, and we go pretty often. :)?

  • We took DD to the aquarium on Mother's Day. She LOVED it. She kept pointing to all the fish and saying "DOG." (Obviously, we need to work on identifying "fish.")

  • She LOVES them! We've taken her to 3 aquariums and 3 different zoos.  Each time she's interested in different things - but she always love them.  We're planning on taking her to another zoo and aquarium this weekend when we're out of town.

If DD has any books with animals in them, it helps to point them out and show her pictures before and after so that when she gets to the zoo she'll have a point of reference to connect the camel in the book with the camel in the zoo, etc.

    Have a great time!

Oh my I've been playing "What sound does the dog/cat/bee/goat/whatever make, Alaina?" to get her to eat since she was 7mos old!! lol We now switch it up to Old Macdonald sounds and just the last 2 wks I've brought out her animal flash cards during dinner lol.

That and she has animal magnets on the fridge.......when I sing Old Macdonald, I point to the animal I'm singing about so she connects the animal to thier name and sound. Oh crap, and the numerous books and books on dogs and other animals and her baby einstien World and Neighborhood Animal dvds are her faves. LOL Gee.........if she doesn't like seeing the real thing I guess there's no hope :)

I love your idea of brining a book along!! She has a book called "First 100 Animals" with gorgeous real photos and I bet we could find most animals right in her book like that! THank you!!

  • Loves it has been 4 times already this year and bought a membership she acutally really does get into the animals!!
  • At 12 months he really enjoyed looking around, but I wouldn't say he was super excited. It's really something that older toddlers get into, but your DD may enjoy it, especially if your zoo has something where she can see animals really close up (like fish or something).
  • We took DD to the aquarium last month and she LOVED it! I couldn't believe how much she enjoyed it! We're taking her to the zoo on Monday for her b-day too. I think its going to be a blast!

  • Yes she loved the aquarium...she was 11 months or so I know it was before she was 1.  She has always been fascinated by fishtanks, though so I knew she'd love it.  She spent more time and interest on the larger, stadium view type tanks than any of the other stuff...she LOVED the sharks and the sea turtles.
