DD won't take formula

Any suggestions? DD has been ebf but I decided to supplement (with enfamil lipil) a couple of her night feedings since she always still seems hungry after she eats with me. Before I was using BM but I'm having trouble pumping enough to keep up with her. Should I even bother with the formula? Should I switch to a different formula? I do keep her on the breast as much as possible.

  • What makes you think she is still hungry after she nurses?  You should avoid supplementing if possible (if she is gaining weight well) because it will make your supply drop.

  • I've supplemented a few times...DS would not take Enfamil Lipil either...he seems to be fine with Similac Early Shield when I do half and half (half formula, half bm).

After awhile on the boob she cries and just seems so frustruated. Sometimes she will suck franticly on her hand. Aren't these indications that she is still hungry? What else do you think could it be?

I know it makes your supply drop, I've been trying to avoid it until the last couple of days. I don't want to give up on bfing yet. She has yet to take any formula though.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel badly!  Can you give her a pacifier or try to get her to re-latch?  I just would hesitate to supplement unless recommended by your pedi because of the effect it will have on your supply.  What is her weight gain like?

No you didn't make me feel bad! Sorry if I came off that way. When I try to get her to re-latch that usually freaks her out more. When I talked to the pedi he thought that she was on the lower end of the weight scale, but she was still in the normal range. He said it was up to me if I wanted to supplement or not. She seems to be gaining, I think shes about 11lbs now? Maybe a little more. Her next pedi visit is in a month so unless I have a problem I'm going to bring it up to him then.
