Infant car seats

What is the longest anyone has kept their kids in them?  We have the SafeSeats that go to 30 or 32 lbs and my kids are right at 20 pounds and using the middle strap hole.  I hear all the talk about the convertible seats but I don't think we're ready yet.  I guess I just want to know how long others were in their seats!

We stopped using the infant seats when they were barely 10 and 13 lb. We just got sick of lugging them around, and I was starting to get worried that I was going to hurt one of the kids.

I could have just left them in the car like convertible car seats, but since I had the option to snap them out of the car I could never stop doing it.

I used the infant seats to get them from the house to the car and from the car into places if I'm not bringing my stroller.  If you don't use the infant seats, how do you get the kiddos to the car, assuming they aren't walking?
