Ty vs. Tyler -- WDYT?

DH loves the name Ty. I'm fine with it, but I think it is more of a nickname for Tyler or Tyson (Tyson is NMS). DH says he does not like the name Tyler and would never call him that. I do like Tyler though. WDYT? Tyler or Ty?

i like tyler. it's better as a formal name. your dh can call him ty and you can call him tyler.

  • I don't think Ty is a good full or formal name. He should have more options when he's an adult. I love the name Ty though. We're considering Tyler with the nn Ty.

I like just Ty......if that's what you plan to call him, why choose another name just to have it?
  • I would rather use Ty as a nickname rather than the actual name.

I don't like Ty as a full name at all. Tyler is a really nice name.?
  • Ty sounds like a nn to me for either Tyler or Tyson. If you never call him anything but Ty, that's okay, but it's not a good working, formal name for an adult.

  • I don't like Ty on it's own just because I'm an English nerd and there's not a real vowel in it. Confused  But I have a cousin named Tyrel and they call him Ty about half the time.  I way prefer Tyrel to Tyler or Tyson.

  • agree with the others. Tyler is more formal and you can give him the nickname Ty

  • I don't like Ty as a full name at all, I would do Tyler and then call him Ty. Or you could even name him Tyler and have your DH call him Ty and you call him by the full name if you prefer.

I've never even heard of Tyrel. Definitely NMS. But thanks for the suggestion.
  • I actually like them both!
  • I prefer Tyler. Tyson makes me think of chicken, and Ty is too informal for my tastes.

Agreed.  I'll vote for the formal fn with a nn every time.

    Me too.

  • Definitely Ty -- Tyler seems dated to me. I had a coworker name Ty. It's unique

I like Tyler. It's definitely on our short list. Just tell your DH he only has to call him Ty.

Same here except my nephew is older and still is ty-ty at times.

    Just like that.

It's unique but not weird, and I think it's perfectly acceptable as a "real" name
