Babies: 0 - 3 Months

4-5 monthers, does your baby go through phases of being more vocal

to not?  A couple of weeks ago Grant was cooing and 'talking' all the time.   however the past week he has been muchh more quiet and only does this 'whisper' talking as i call it lol.  it's like a combo raspberry/super quiet babble. what's the deal huh huh?

  • Oh yeah, DD went though a phase of non stop talking then she went almost a whole month of quiet. Now she's starting to talk and blow raspberries more.
  • yes! i was just saying this to her last night. "You don't want to talk to us anymore?" She was cooing about 2 weeks ago all the time. Less and less recently and just does a moaning talking. It's changing.
  • He does it more at certain times thoughout the day. Some days he is more vocal than others, it really just depends.

  • Yup. Leo was squealing and yelling at stuff whenever he was awake and then last week he got very quiet and solemn and has started doing the "whisper talking" that you speak of. I think they're just trying out different sounds as they absorb the ever-growing world around them.

  • Kelsey is in the squeal phase.  She has definitely figured out she has a voice and is getting progressively louder.  I think she is trying to compete with her super loud sister.
  • DS has been experimenting with different sounds. For awhile it was screaming (LOUD) -- and it lasted for a few days where it was all he would do, non-stop. Now he still screeches a lot - but he's discovering sounds he can make with his drool (like spitty, gurgly noises) that he seems to be more intersted with the last few days. I think they go through phases -- once they learn something new, they move on.
  • There are days where he will sing and be really loud and then sometimes I can barely get him to make a peep. Not sure why, but I love to listen to him when he's really loud!

  • Sssssssssssshhhhhhhh he's thinking!

My theory is that they are integrating so much info. that sometimes they are just doing a lot of thinking & processing & will soon make a developmental leap.

  • Oh yeah, we're totally there. Of course we don't have much quiet time, not by most people's standards. Baby's a loud mouth just like her mama!
  • Yes, he will spend an entire day "chatting" and then is fairly quiet the next.
