Anyone move DC from in-home to DCC around 24m?

Currently DS is in an in-home daycare but I'm thinking of moving him back to a center (he was in one until 11months) but I'm a little worried about how he will adjust.  He is used to getting to nap when he gets tired and not being around many other kids his age.  If you made a switch around this age was your DC able to adapt fairly quickly?

  • yep!  i had Carson in an in home daycare from 13 months to 18 months and then moved him at 18 months to a daycare center.  he adjusted fine.  i stopped by the daycare with him the day before he started and he hung out for about 30 mins.  then the next day he went for 4 hours (half a day) then the following day he went for a full day.  he went from sleeping in a pnp at the inhome dc to sleeping on a cott and he did perfect.  he has never tried to get up from the cott to run around and he eats at daycare very well at a table and chairs.  i could not believe that my baby was capable of all this, lol!  he LOVES daycare!  took him a little while to get the concept of sitting in circle time.  at first he would hang on the outskirts and the teachers let him do what was comfortable for him as long as he was safe.  now he is all about it and gets up and sings and dances in circle time.  gl!  i always think it is harder on us than it is on dc.Big Smile

  • I'm not in the exact same circumstance, but DD is almost 18 months and does both a center and an in-home lady.  She is at the center Mon, Thur, Fri and the in-home on Tues and Wed.  She adjusts very well between the 2.  At the in home, she naps when she needs to and gets a morning and afternoon nap in.  At the center, they have a set nap time from 11:30 - 1:30 and she does that for them very well.  We have no problems at night with her regardless of where she is.  You can tell she is a little more tired on the days she goes to the center, so she might go to bed a little earlier (15-30 minutes or so) than the other nights.

Again, not the same situation, but hopefully this helps you a little.

  • oops, sorry, in response to the sleep thing.  at the inhome dc he slept around 2 other kids and that took a little getting used to.  Carson liked to stay up and chat with the other kids and they just said forget and layed down and went to sleep.  his naps where less then what i wanted for him for a little bit but i just adjusted his bedtime a little on the days he did not nap very well.  eventually he adjusted and got used to sleeping around other little ones.  took about one month.
  • oh, I will add (after reading abpdjs' post) that DD sleeps in a crib at our house and the in home and on a cot/mat at the center and she seems to do fine.  I ditto abpdjs on it is harder on us than it is on them!

We're getting ready to transition DD... she's been in small in-home situations since I went back to work, first a nanny share and now a sitter who watches only her. So she's never been around kids her age on a regular basis (the other girl in the nanny share was 18 months older than her) , and for the last ~10 months, she's been the only baby.

She'll be starting preschool in three weeks. I'm also a little nervous about the nap situation. She's done drop-in daycare before when her sitter was unavailable -- the first time, she was about 13 months old and she napped for all of 20 minutes Wink, but she's gone other times since then and napped for a decent amount of time.

I'm anticipating a bit of a rough adjustment for the first few weeks, but I really think it'll be good for her once we get past that.

I can keep you posted on how it goes Smile

Thanks!  I would love to hear how she does.  GL!

  • My older DD went to a small in-home daycare from 10 weeks to 22 months, then that provider quit and we started her at a center. I was so worried about how she'd do, but she did GREAT! I'm so glad we made the switch. She has just become so much more social and outgoing and I think the center environment is really good for her at this age. She eats better there than at home. She naps fine on the cot, although she doesn't always nap very long. That's the one thing that hasn't been great, but overall it has gone extremely well. Good luck!
