Roller coasters in first trimester?

We're planning our annual Six Flags (amusement park) trip with our friends, and my friend who just found out she's pregnant is planning to come.  She'll be about 8 weeks along when we go...can she ride roller coasters?  I didn't think she should, but she seems to think it's fine.  WDYT?

Re: Roller coasters in first trimester?

  • I'm pretty sure that the roller coasters have warnings right on them saying not to ride if pregnant...

  • I'm sure it's fine. Babies have LOTS of padding in there.

I'm also sure the amusement park will have a rule against pregnant women going on rides.

  • um, no. Tell your friend that's a big no-no. If you have ever beenn to a place like Dave and Busters or an arcade, there are actual "rides" that have a big warning about getting on them when pregnant. So, a roller coaster is ten times worse...especially six flags.

  • For the record: I'm not saying I would personally do it, or that I think it's a good idea.

But at 8 weeks the odds of actually causing any damage are slim to none.

  • Ok thank you!  You've confirmed my thoughts.  Hopefully she listens to me.

You're right that the chances are slim.  I just personally think it's a silly/dumb risk to take, because riding a rollercoaster is so NOT necessary, you know?

  • I'm sure by the time you get there her morning sickness will have set in.

The LAST thing she'll want to do is go on a roller coaster.

    LOL.

  • I was told that it was an absolute no by my OB. I didn't even ask about it, he simply brought it up at my first appointment.
  • Whoa...  That's no just a no, that's an OH HELLLLL NO.

The risk isn't actual damage to the baby, it's about damage to the placenta.  The thrill of roller coasters are in the g forces - which can cause the placenta to seperate from the uterus - which can kill the baby almost immediately.

As a major adrenaline junkie and a roller coaster maniac, there's absolutely NO WAY i would go on a thrill ride while pregnant.  Period.

This. Which is why we didn't go to Disney last month.

  • I would say no. Tell her to ask her Dr.

    ?

Ditto on this. ?I was told no using our riding mower on our big property because the bouncing can tear the placenta away from the wall of the uterus which will kill the baby almost immediately. ?There are warnings on ALL roller coasters-even some of the slower more mellow rides at Disney that you would think are ok.

I would have to say, not a risk worth taking at all.?

  • I don't care how much you like roller coasters, its not worth the risk.
