How many DPO should we test?

yeah, we're only at 4pdICI and i'm already wondering when to test, lol.

I'm thinking 12 dp ICI (which is hopefully 12 dpo!), because if there is to be a CD1, we expect it to be the following day (5/27) - but who knows considering how wonky this cycle was!

So when did you test?

Re: How many DPO should we test?

  • Our RE said to wait for our beta (or AF).  The common answer across TB seems to be 12-14 dpo or the first day after your missed period. I think 12dp ici isn't bad, but if it's a BFN you need to remember that could be early.  I'd have a hard time seeing a BFN at 12dp and then continuing to have any hope.  But that's me...the girl that's been POAS since Friday to see if the trigger is out.

  • the first cycle we got antsy and tested at 12dpo. she started the next day. after that we decided to wait until we were scheduled to at 14dpo, and she always started at 13dpo, the day before we were supposed to test.

except for the last time. she was saying that whole week that she really felt different, but she couldn't explain it or say why (she actually said after the insem itself that it felt different that time). so we tested at 13dpo because she hadn't started yet. we did a digital the following day to confirm. we didn't do any betas until after we got the BFP at home.

  • my lutuel phase is very short (11 days), our first cycle I  tested really early.  If you look back at the blog it was just crazy.  For the next cycle I tested the day before I was due for my period.  The last cycle I tested on the Sunday before my period was due (on wednesday) and got a neg.  Then waited for wednesday to take another test.  Where it was postive. I found that the early testing just made me feel more stressed.  But everyone is different so do what you and A feel most comfortable with.

  • I would wait until 13-14dpo. You'll get a more accurate answer that way.

  • If you both can test and be truly, completely okay with a potentially false negative, then sure, satisfy your curiosity and test early (why not?). However, if you think that either of you would be bummed by not seeing a BFP, even though it's early, then I'd say WAIT. (We tested early and it was not good for us-- surprisingly I was ok with it [expected the negative-- at that point I was really just testing out the trigger] but S was very upset by it. Next cycle we're waiting for the beta, officially...S said I could test as long as she doesn't know about it.)

    Two questions for you:
    1) Do you have a beta scheduled? If so, what dpo?
    2) Will A be on progesterone supplements?

Progesterone supps delay AF, so if you don't have a scheduled beta and she's on the supplements, I wouldn't wait for AF 'cause you could be waiting a long time! Smile

    nope and nope :)

    I appreciate all the input!

At this point I dont think a negative would be too traumatic - we are both expecting it.  But, i'm also guessing that its one of those things that you can't predict how you'll feel until you are there, ya know? Mostly, though, we deal better with knowing vs. not knowing, no matter what the outcome actually is. ie: i think A would do better w/ a neg HPT than she would w/ unexpected AF.

I know exactly what you mean. I am an information junkie (in life, not just with ttc things), so I always want to know as much as I can as soon as I can. I need data!

In that case, then, I say test when you are both comfortable and then get on here and let us know!! Big Smile

  • Even when we knew it was going to be a BFN we tested. I had to know. We tried to wait to 12-14DPO in the earlier cycles.
  • I think there are two different types of people when it comes to this question - early testers and late testers. You'll probably have to try both to see which one you are. Of course, it would be better not to have more than one cycle to experiment with. :-)I was always an early tester. For me, it felt like a way to ease myself into the bad news one probability chunk at a time. (i.e. Today I am 88% sure I am not pregnant, tomorrow I'll be 92%, etc.) that felt so muchess scary to me than the absolution of AF's arrival. I was always ready for her when she came. Also, I have found that most ttcers have little trouble hanging on to any glimmer of hope, no matter how small it may be, but you'll have to see what your own experience is. I got my bfp at 11dpo, but I know of MANY women who tested negative that day and still got bfps later. Good luck!
