Sewing Machine

I have been sewing by hand but now I want to buy a sewing machine and would like you to recommend yours....I don't want to spend too much money as I am just starting out. TIA!

Re: Sewing Machine

  • I have a brother sewing machine.  I am no pro and I find it easy to use.  My grandma bought it for me, but I think it was like $100 at Kmart.  I've seen them at Walmart reasonable priced too.

My grandma showed me how to get  it set up one time and I haven't had any problems with it.

I would NOT reccomend getting the "Shark" brand.  The first one my grandma bought me was Shark and she bought it at Kohls.  But she couldn't even figure it out, and when I did get it working (for the 5 minutes it worked right) it just didn't seem to run the same way my Brother sewing machine does.

  • I only use Singers, I highly recommend looking at garage sales or goodwill for your first.
  • DH bought his at Sears for $60. Yes I said DH. It was cheap because it was a special deal. I don't even know what brand it is. I am so not the domestic house wife in the family. But I can bake pies that are very YUMMY! so its a trade.

If you get a machine secondhand, you'll have to get it serviced, so it might be worth your while to get a cheap model at Target or elsewhere.  The basic Singers are good.  I got mine from Costco online.

  • I have an Elna - I love it. Excellent quality.
