Have you ever colored your hair yourself?

I'm going to attempt to do this for the first time tomorrow morning.  I thought I'd do it tonight but then worried that maybe if my hair wasn't fully dry after I washed it that it would stain my pillowcase or something.  I'm just going to go all brown to get rid of the highlights that are growing out.

Anyway, any tips or pointers?

  • wear an old button up shirt that you don't care if it gets dye on it or not.  Dawn or any other dish soap will take off any dye you haveo n your skin.

I like to use a comb after I put the dye in to make sure everything is covered.

  • Do it when your hair is dirty, they dye works better that way. Put some vaseline along your hairline on your forehead and on your ears and use an old towel.

I usually start at the roots and then work in sections and then all over. I use a shower cap while I wait and then I just jump in the shower and rinse until it comes out clear.

    Good luck!

  • I have dyed my own hair many, many times and never had it stain my pillow case even when soaking wet! You have to rinse your hair and wash it after you dye  it so no dye will be on it.

I've had some of my red dyes stain...

  • I've dyed my hair many times.  I always use the same shirt and towels.  Start at the roots and work your way out.  It is best not to have just washed hair (not because the dye sticks to the hair better but because you will have oils on your scalp so the dye won't bother it as much).  I don't worry about it getting on my hairline (skin) because it will come off when you rinse it out.  I usually rinse it in the sink but sometimes in the shower.  I never use shampoo after dying (it says not to) but make sure you use the conditioner that comes with it.  I buy my own gloves (I hate the ones that come with the package) although I DO use them when I rinse my hair.  The dye comes out light but turns darker.  BTW...I always buy lighter than what I really want because otherwise it is always darker than I really want (if that makes sense).  I have a lot of grays so I buy "golden" browns (makes my grays look like highlights.  lol  Because I have gray hair I leave it on the length of time it says for gray plus about 15 minutes.  I dry it well before going to bed.  I'm sure it would come off on a light pillowcase if it was wet even though it doesn't come off on the towel.  Good luck.
