At what age are babies baptized?

I was thinking about doing it when they are like 6 months old..is that ok? :) I have no idea what the "right" age is?  Also, since they are twins does anyone know if it is ok if they have the same set of godparents? I'm assuming it is.  It anything happend to us, I would want them to be together of course.  Thanks!

Re: At what age are babies baptized?

  • My LO will be baptized at about 7 months (when my DH is home for R&R).  I think that it is up to the parents to determine when to baptize.

As for godparents. . . I think that having one set is totally fine.  Just keep in mind that god parents do not have to be the same as potential guardians.  I think, in many cases, they are, but they don't have to be.  One is legal, the other is religious.

  • I think it really depends on what faith you practice.  In the Catholic religion, traditionally it has been the earlier a baby is baptized, the better.  In fact, it used to be that many women wouldn't take their babies out of the house until they were baptized.  Like everything else, it seems those traditions have relaxed a bit in recent years.  I had Reagan baptized when she was 3 weeks old.  I probably would have waited a little longer, but we made the trip from VA to OH where my family lives for Christmas and we had her baptized there (Reagan was born on Dec. 7).

  • Yeah, I think any time within the first year or so would be reasonable. But maybe check with your church? We're planning on getting our baby baptized around Christmas so our family can attend. And as long as the godparents agree to doing it for both twins, I don't see why not. :)

I'm catholic and we did it at about 4.5 months. ?It was the most convenient for us and family who were traveling in to be with us. ?We had 2 godfathers for my dd. ?My DH is a twin and he shares his godparents.

  • We're Catholic and will be baptizing the girls at 10 months (7 months adjusted) just because it was the only time that worked for our families.  We have two sets of godparents due to the fact that DH and I both have a brother so one brother is godfather for Gaby and the other for Alaina.
  • I don't think there is a "rule."   We had our DS baptised at 3mo, but I've been to baptisms for children as old as a year.

  • We are doing in 6/20 (the boys will be 2.5 mos old).  It worked out best for us and my nanni wants to see them so badly that we wanted to do it earlier rather than later so that she can come up from florida.  We chose 2 sets of godparents mainly because DH and I each have a brother so we wanted each of them to be one.

  • My sister baptized her twins when they were 6 months old. It was kind of cute because they were more aware of the water being poured over their heads then if they had been baptized sooner. She waited because of dealing with medical issues and the hecticness (if it is not a word it should be) of everything.

As far as having the same God Parents, I think it is fine. But please be aware that even though they are Godparents does not give them gaurdianship in the eyes of the law. You will still need a written will stating your intentions. Very important!

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.

  • We are baptising next week - 1 wk after 4months.  We would have done it sooner, but we are new to the church and they want you to be members for 3months.

    I think anything is OK.

  • We're Catholic and our babies will be 4 months.  The literature we got says you should do it bascially as soon as you can get it together.  We are having two sets of godparents but only because DH insisted on including his wacky sister.
  • I wanted to baptize the baby early on, around 3 or 4 months. But my brother who is the godfather will be in England for a studying abroad thing. So we have to push it out till like 8 or 9 months.

  • It's nice to baptize them when they are still light enough to hold for a while - my cousin was huge and was baptized at about 9-10 months (he was adopted), and my mom said her arms were about to fall off from holding him during the parts of the ceremony where they all stood up front. ?
    ?
The Godparents can be the same or different for each child, but as pp said, they have absolutely no relation to the legal guardians at all. ?You probably shouldn't wait to write/update a will like you can wait on a baptism. ?
    ?
Parents also have to take a baptism prep class in most Catholic churches, I don't know about other churches. ?Once you take the class, you can sign up for an available slot for the baptism - like weddings, they fill up fast at my church (some churches do them during the service, some after, some every weekend, some twice a month, etc.). ??

  • DD was 4 months old when we had her baptized. Dds godparents are not a mairred couple (my brother is GF and my cousin is the GM). My mom will raise dd if something happens to us. I think they could have their own sets of GP. I'm not a twin but my bro and I have different GP. For us they are just good, loving people (family in our case) who help teach us the way of the bible. I think anytime you pick to have the baptized is the right time!
