workouts

I am not pregnant yet but hope to be soon.  I am wondering what type of workout/running is allowed for someone who is expecting and for how long into the pregnancy.  I am coaching this summer and want to work out with the team.  Thanks for any info.

Re: workouts

  • I would think if you talk to your dr, they can give you a better idea of what is good for you and what might be harmful.  My dr. encouraged workouts that I was already doing and not to start anything new that would be strenuous on my body.  A family member of mine ran almost all the way through her pregnancy without any problems.  I would think that your body will let you know if you are doing too much.

I did a lot of walking and working out with weights.  I also coached a college dance team until I was 8 months pregnant.  I was down on the floor dancing with them.  I looked ridiculous, but it wasn't a problem.  My doc ok'd it as long as it wasn't a new activity.  In fact he encouraged activity.  Good luck!

  • Just as the PP's stated, my doctors okayed anything I was already doing. ?They just cautioned against taking up anything new and against contact sports. Although a girl with whom I played soccer played throughout her first trimester. ?I would not have done that but she claims her doctor said it was fine. ?

  • Ask your doc.  They know your situation and can tell you what is ok for you.  My OB allowed me to run until I felt like it was starting to hurt.  I had to be really careful to not overheat.  I ran until almost 28 weeks, and then the knees started hurting.  They only time I was not nauseous was when I was moving, so I kept going as long as I could.  My OB also said I could swim and water ski (yeah riiiight) if I wanted to.  Pilates and some weight lifting was ok.  No ab work after the first tri though.  I would just ask and have the OB answer specifically to what you normally do.
