Meconium and CDs

Hi Everyone,

I've been prepping my stash for my DD's arrival in June and was planning on cloth diapering from the very beginning.  One of the nurses at my birth center told me to use sposies for the first 3 days or so because the meconium might ruin the CDs?  This surprised me.  Anyone have any experience/comments/suggestions?  Many thanks!

Re: Meconium and CDs

  • I didn't cd ds until he was 7 months but I plan to cd this baby at the hospital from day one. I know that several moms on here have said that the meconium was not as big a deal as it's made out to be and that bf poo caused far more staining to their diapers then the meconium did. If you want to cd from the begining and are worried about staining then you could pick up some liners for the first few days. I plan to just roll with it myself. Diapers are going to get stained any way you look at it and you can always sun the stains out if they bother you.

  • Thank you so much!  I'm not concerned by staining at all-- that's what diapers are for as far as I'm concerned.  I just didn't know what the nurse meant by ruined.  I was envisioning diapers I could no longer use.  I'll go ahead with the CDs.
  • I've heard the same thing as pp here on the boards, but I do plan on using a liner with baby #2 - we used sposies with DS until the merconium had passed because someone I know said it was a PITA to get out of cloth.  I figure I'll just use a liner and then I doubt I'll have too many problems.

  • We got meconium on a couple of prefolds, and I just washed it out right away and soaked them in oxyclean.  A little very light staining stayed on, but after regular rotation through the diaper laundry and clothesline, I have to look very very hard to find it.  We didn't use liners.
  • We used thirsties fab fitted diapers from birth and the meconium washed right out of those, no special treatment needed.  I don't know if them being synthetic (microfleece) made that easier, but there were no stains.  We did have yellow bf poop stains in our crickett's but those came right out with sunning.
