Hi! I tried asking this earlier but guess it never got posted...Anyway, I am going to be 21 wks in my twin PG when I return "home" this summer from living abroad in the UK. I wanted to 1st fly into PA though to be with my grandma on her 92nd b-day. Then my mom will drive me home ( a 9hr. car ride total) and we'll stop 1/2 way and stay a night or 2 at my sister's. So, 41/2 hrs. each leg. Is it doable? This sounds silly, but I haven't been able to test how I manage on road trips since I'm live in the city and so it's only been subways, trains, walking, and/or flying! Any tips or experience you can share?
Also, my sister's baby shower (she's PG too!!) is planned for when I am 28 wks and it is about a 4 1/2 hr. drive for me. Is it still ok to travel at this pt.? Any feedback is appreciated!! Thanks!!!
Re: Road Travel Tips??
I did a 3.5 hr car ride at 20 weeks. My best advice for any travel = DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!! Bad part is that you have to pee a lot but it's worth it. I didn't because I "felt fine" but boy did I pay for it later. I got dehydrated, everything hurt, I was miserable and I blame it on the lack of water.
oh, and take your own pillows. Even if you are staying with family they probably don't have enough extra pillows for a PG woman. You don't want to shove one of their nice pillows between your legs. Having your own pillows will help you sleep better to.
My OB's advice was that after 20 weeks I shouldn't drive anywhere for longer than an hour without getting out to stretch my legs, and I should drink lots and lots of water. If you follow both of those recommendations, you will actually find that several of those stops to stretch your legs will also be stops to pee.
At 19/20 weeks we took a trip from Kansas City to Minneapolis for a friends wedding and I had no troubles at all. My doctor told me my cut off for traveling was 25 weeks. So right before I turned 25 weeks we took one last trip to Wisconsin to see my family. We drove a little more then 11 hours each way and it was tolerable. The following weekend we took just at short 30 minute trip to IL's and that was very uncomfortable.?
That being said, I didnt have any troubles with my pregnancy, nor did I need bedrest. Other women have been put on bedrest very ?early on. You will just need to keep talking with your dr along the way and get their opinion before making any set plans.?
