work relocation advice needed LONG

You ladies give great advice and can hopefully give me some perspective about the possibility of me relocating.

Background I am a retail manager and work 25 mins from my house lots of traffic usually so a 30 min drive at least.

There is a potential for me to get transferred to a store much closer to my house 10-15 min drive. Pay would stay the same, title the same etc. so no real change in that situation.

Normally I don't think I would consider it because I love my store, my managment team, my associates etc., but I am thinking with a new baby coming that it may be  nicer to be spending less time on the road and more time at home with the baby. There is a lot more to consider such as the the new team is smaller so my schedule could be more inflexible as there isn't as many people to cover a day off if I needed it so that is the down side. On the positive the manager at the new location just had a baby last december so she would be empathetic to situations that would arise.

So just want your thoughts would you stay where you're happy and comfortable with a long drive each day, or go to a place that will probably be great and you could drive way less.

  • If you don't like it, could you be transferred back?  I say go for it, if you think it will be as good of a situation.  Time is very precious after you have the baby. :)

The fact that it isn't as flexible would be a red flag for me.  I transferred jobs to be closer to home after having DD and it was a big mistake since I lost a lot of flexibility that I had with my other job.  It was really hard whenever DD got sick and/or needed picked up from daycare. If your DH has a flexible schedule or you have someone else for back-up care than I would say go for it.
  • I wouldn't do it because of the possible inflexibility.  Also, a lot changes when you have a baby, as you know and others know, and I found it best that I had the same stable job with the same people.  I am thinking about #2, but also interviewing for other positions.  I'm starting to think about staying where I am simply because I've established myself.  Also...25 mins sounds amazing to me.  I drive 50 minutes.  I drove 25 mins to my last job and loved it.

  • My DH is in retail management so I'm kind of familiar with how the positions are. I have to say that I've noticed a BIG difference in flexibility going from a larger store to smaller store environment. Is your DH's job flexible, so if your DC was sick he could be off if you couldn't?

Also, like pp mentioned I think it's sometimes better to stay where you are comfortable and more established when you have such a big change like a new baby.

All in all, I guess I don't think a 10-15 reduction in commute time is enough to justify switching.

  • If not much would change other than the drive time then I might consider making the change.  If you can shave 20 minutes off your commute every day that is 40 extra minutes a day (more than 3 hours a week!) that you are getting back.
  • "or go to a place that will probably be great and you could drive way less."

I think you already answered your own questions.
