Weaning from the swing

I have a 5 month old who still naps in his swing.  I've tried the crib, where he will sleep at night, but he will only sleep like 10-15 minutes before he wakes up when I put him there for a nap.  So I just keep letting him sleep in the swing...he's about to reach the weight limit(he's already 19 pounds and his feet hang off the end) so I know sooner or later this has to stop.  Any ideas on how to get him to nap in his crib??

Re: Weaning from the swing

  • is he crying when he wakes up in the crib during naptime? ?fussing? ?babbling? ?do you put him in there drowsy but awake??

  • I have the same problem. She'll only nap in her swing during the day. If I try to put her in the PNP she'll sleep for about 10min then wakes up and eventually fusses if I leave her laying there. I dunno what I'll do once she grows out of the swing. She'll sleep in the bassinet overnight, though.

  • I try drowsy but awake but he ends up screaming.  I will leave him in there until he starts actually crying.  He will fuss for a little while and then he starts wailing and gets himself really worked up...I don't know if letting him CIO would work because of this...any ideas?

  • Is it a pompasan (sp?) swing?  If it is, he probably loves the nesting feel of it as much as the actual swinging, so if you can mimic that nesting feel somewhere else, it might help.  FWIW, I snuggle DS into our feather comforter on our bed if I have to go to the bathroom or something quick (he sinks down into it like a little cocoon), and 9x out of 10 he falls asleep within minutes.
  • my son slept in his papasan swing until he was 9 months old.

my 2nd one loves napping in the swing too.

i was thinking about putting him in his car seat for naps and eventually switching it over to his bassinet.

  • I have the exact same problem. My LO is almost 5 months and every nap during the day is in his swing. He just sleeps so much longer in the swing and wakes up happy. He sleeps great at night in his crib. I am thinking about putting him in the swing starting on a lower setting until he can nap in it without it on and then starting naps in the crib. I don't know if it will work but I feel like I should be breaking him of this habit soon. He is napping right now in the swing!

  • mine naps in my arms or the swing on the weekends or carseat. she does nap in a pack and play at daycare but if i dare try that on the weekend, she won't sleep.

when she gets a little bigger-is 5 months old now...so I am thinking in a month or so..i will try the crib again. might have to let her CIO which i hate but might have to happen.
