Making your own wipes...

My co-worker just came by and told me how he and his wife used to make their own wipes. You cut paper towels in half (Target brand paper towels are already cut in half) and you put them in a container full of baby oil and baby shampoo (I don't know what the ratio is). Then you flip the container upside down so the towels get soaked, and WALA! Wipes.

I thought it was pretty neat. I don't know if I'll do it, but *shrug*

  • Baby shampoo and baby oil in your baby's sensitive areas without rinsing?

Honestly if you are using homemade wipes, there is no reason to add anything but water to moisten them.

  • Yeah...I would do water with maybe a few drops of baby wash...not a full strength soak.

  • Have you ever tried to blow you nose on a paper towel?  It'll rip your face off.  I think I'll pass on wiping the skin off my baby's bottom.

  • There is a brand of paper towels called Viva that is really soft, like toilet paper. But they are thick so you don?t have to worry about them falling apart when wet. Those would be ideal for this.

  • I second the viva?recommendation. For newborns, our hospital recommended using a soft cloth and water for the first month or so.?

    This.

If you really want to make your own, it might make more sense to make reusable ones.  You can use something soft like baby washclothes and do the same thing (although I think you only need a very small amount of any oil/soap.)  It would mean washing dirty wipes, though!

  • you do not "need" wipes.  Just use something soft, disposable and wet with water. The wipes can sometimes predispose the babies to infections.
  • One of my friends was telling me about her homemade wipes.  She took old flannel shirts and cut them up into rags and had a stack ready.  Then they had a small pail (with a cover) with a solution of water, a little oil, and a little baby soap and would wipe using this.  And since they did cloth diapers, they just added them into the load each night and dried everything in the morning.  Worked out slick.
