Did I over-react?

I left work about an hour early this afternoon due to strong fumes from roof repairs that were being done today.  The repairmen were putting sealer all over the roof, including right around vents, so the fumes quickly started leaking into our office building.  I thought it would be better safe than sorry to remove myself from the fumes (and I can continue working from home), since I didn't know what the chemicals were.  Would you have done the same thing?

Re: Did I over-react?

  • You didn't over react. If I had the option of finishing work from home I'd go home too.

  • Yep, I would leave even if I wasn't pregnant if the fumes were strong in my office.

  • I'd go home. Those fumes could give you a crazy-bad headache if nothing else.
  • I would have gone home too!
  • I did the same thing (with my building manager's encouragement as a lot of NON-pg people left before me) a few weeks ago when builders were sealing concrete on a lower floor.  Better safe than sorry.
  • I would have done the same thing. If the fumes were technically bad for you more then likely you would have got a headache just from the smell.

  • Without a doubt I'd've left too.  Good call.
  • I would have done the same thing.  Even if the fumes wouldn't harm the baby they might give you a killer headache!

  • From https://www.uwo.ca/humanresources/docandform/docs/healthandsafety/construction/roofing_projects.pdf I am pregnant, will the roof tar odors affect my baby? There is indirect evidence that exposure to roof tar chemicals may cause birth defects.Laboratory studies of roof tar extracts have shown DNA changes in human fetal cells exposed to asphalt fume extracts. This may be a concern for asphalt workers because of the higher exposure to fumes, but not for building occupants with a much lower exposure.  ****************************************************************** Ya, I'm glad that building occupants aren't at risk because of a one-time exposure. But even knowing that the risk comes from repeated exposure? I'd have left too.
  • Heck yeah I would have done the same thing! Strong fumes would make me sick - I can't even stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Always better safe than sorry.

Thanks, ladies!  I feel a lot better knowing other PG ladies would have done the same thing!  (And I was definitely getting a headache anyways--always a sign that the fumes probably aren't good.)
