I don't get it!??

...ok, so I got Ryleigh's paperwork for Kindergarten at Mariemont today.  They only have half day morning (8:30-11:20am) so, I researched "after-school" options and they have 2 things, one is called kindergarten enrichment from 11:20-3:30pm and then the normal after school program from 3:20-6pm, obviously I would need both of those...So it would still cost as much as her daycare now ($189 a week) to have both of those programs!!  WTH!?   So I did a little more research and found out that the Catholic school down the road does have Kindergarten and it's full day!   For a non-parishioner (I can become a parishioner, but didn't catch the price) it's $2950.00 per year paid over 10 months, so $295 a month!  Plus they have after-school provided by the Y (I don't know their price yet).

Can someone explain to me why it's cheaper to send my child to private catholic school than it is to Public school??

Sorry for the rambling, but this whole thing just boggled my mind!  I had wanted to send her to private school anyway, but we're in such a good district I was ok with the public schools!

  • I dont have any advice on this subject (sorry).

I just had to say that I love Ryleigh's baby picture, it is adorable!!!  look at all that hair.  She is a beautiful little girl.

  • wow that doesn't make sense and thanks for posting this so I can try to remember this when the time comes for us.  I can't believe that price difference.

FYI.  a lady I use to work with swore up and down about all day kindergar, granted she is from China and they stress education a lot more then we do but she said she thought that was the best thing for her daughter.

  • I have heard of a couple other people running in to the same thing. It is those after programs that get you. We have already looked in to the private schools for kindergarten and we will be going that route as well. It looks like a big chunk of $ upfront but when you break it down in to monthly payments, it is still a lot less than what most people are paying for daycare. Good luck with your decision!

  • We send Kellen to a Catholic school and when he was in kindergarten he went all day. All the kids went all day except for one and she decided she wanted to go all day as well. It was great b/c I only had to find childcare from 3pm-5pm. They had an after school care program and it was $8 a day or $11 a day if they had early dismissal. That was such a big help. We are not in a good public school district right now IMO, but when we move we will be in Oak Hills Local school district for the option of public or private. I grew up public, DH private. Private is expensive and public at this age always seems to be more. It stinks!!

With Catholic schools there is a wide array of pricing, especially at the K-8 level.  In talking with a woman I work with, she has basically said that the "better" catholic schools are more expensive.  The "better" ones will have most of their grads going to the more competitive Catholic High Schools (Moeller, St Ursula, etc...).

Maybe see if you can find a program for 3:20-6 other than the other program you found?  Maybe there's a cheaper option on that end?

  • I'm actually shocked at the cost of kindergarten both public and private!...and I have about 4 more years yet - I'm sure it will be even worse! AGUH!
  • I teach at a Catholic high school and in the local grade schools, we see a TON of parents who put their kids in Catholic kindergarten and then public school from then on for just this reason. So if you chose this you definitely wouldn't be in the minority! For the money, it may be worth it to start her in Mariemont schools in 1st grade???

  • I'm just not sure what I want to do yet.  I was all for Catholic Schools when I lived in Anderson and it was "my" church.  I think the only thing holding me back a little is that I really don't know much about this Catholic school?  I wish they had some type of rating system like the public schools do.   I know that generally most Catholic schools have a "better" education (obviously depending on the district) but I don't want to put her in a private school that is not even competitive with the "Excellent" public school I have right across the street!   If it was "my" church I would have no problem at all.  My sister and I both went to Catholic schools for all of elementary so I would like to continue that with Ryleigh

  • You may be able to find feedback on the particular catholic school on the Cincy Moms Like Me website.  Sometimes they have info on schools categorized by the area.  That does seem crazy, though!
