Baby Names

Is Ryan unisex?

I've always thought of this as a boys name but I've been hearing about a few girls being named this recently?  Do you think this name has the potential to become unisex (e.g., Jordan)?  I like the name but I'm trying to stay away from unisex or girls names for a boy.

Re: Is Ryan unisex?

  • Personally I think of it as a boy's name, but I also dated a Ryan.  I think Jordan is more unisex then Ryan.

    It shouldn't be.

Ditto, but unfortunately, it is becoming unisex. ?

  • Jeez, everything is unisex now. If i ever have a son, I don't what I will name him! Rufus maybe. I can't imagine a girl ever being named Rufus. Many dogs, but no girls.

  • I defintely think of it more as a boy's name (it's my son's actually), but I have heard of it for a girl. Which I think it's cute. But you have to be a cute and/or outgoing girl I think to pull off a boys name, otherwise I think it can backfire lol.

  • I like it. My name is Rikki so maybe that makes me bias on unisex, but I have a good friend that is a girl and her name is Rian. I like it, it's differant and cute.

  • I have a good girl friend named Ryann.  I think it's unisex.

  • I think it is unisex.  I know a girl named Ryann, and several boy Ryans.
  • It's on it's way to being unisex, but it shouldn't be!  It's no more a girls' name than Matthew, Michael, or Jacob.

Note to moms-to-be of girls... there are plenty of great girls' names out there.  Leave the boys' names alone!

  • I have known of females named Ryan for years. There was even a soap opera in the 80's called Ryan's Hope and Ryan was a girl. I prefer for a boy though. I like feminine names for girls.

  • I definitely see it only as a boy name. My brother, DHs brother, and two good male friends are Ryans. I taught one little girl who was a Ryan, but spelled it Ryann.

  • I know a beautiful little girl named Ryan.  I think it is unisex... and I see no problem with that.
  • I don't like it for a girl, but do know a couple people that have used it for the middle name of their DD's

  • I know a lady who had 2 girls. Her first one is Jordyn and the other is Rian. I don't like Ryan unisex, but to each her own I guess.

I know a few girls named Ryan and I really like it but I don't think it is going to become an overly popular girls name...who knows though.

I hope not.  I think of it as a boy's name and don't understand why parents can't come up with a lovely female name for their daughter.

  • I've known one girl named Ryan, but I generally think of it as a boy's name.
  • When I hear the name Ryan, I automatically think boy.  However, I knew one girl in college who spelled her name Ryann and since then I have liked it for a girl's name.

  • I don't at all like Ryan as a girl's name.

  • I still think of it as a boys name but I am surprised everyday by the newly unisex names.
