Multiples

If you take your 18 month-2 year olds shopping...

how do you do it?  I just can't figure out the best way to shop with them if there are no double seated shopping carts (which no stores around me have except Costco and now Shop Rite).

When we go to Target I strap each girl into their own shopping cart and then push/pull them both around the store - which is a  pain in the butt.

Today i tried strapping Katie into the seat and putting Charlotte in the actual cart part which was a FIASCO.  She wouldn't stay sitting and then was trying to climb out.  I tried letting her walk and hold my hand but every time i let it go for even a second she took off.

They won't shop in their stroller for more than a minute - they just don't want to be strapped in there.  so that doesn't work.

Forget putting them on their 'leashes' aka backpacks.  They grab things off the shelves faster than i can keep up.

I just can't figure out an easy way..... I guess that's the key with multiples, there is no 'easy' anything...lol.  I was curious what other MoMs do.

  • Do you have a wagon? Mine already fuss if they are in the stroller for too long, but they LOVE the wagon. They have a better view and sit up straight - which they enjoy. You look pretty silly pulling a wagon around in a store, but whatever works, right?
  • Amen! The only way I can go grocery shopping with them is if I am running in for a few quick things. I put them in their stroller and hurry. Have to tried to let them hold something naughty? Like keys, cell phone (locked), remote control, etc, something that they usually are not allowed to play with so it will hold their attention for a few minutes while you hurry and shop?  Pretty much, I just wait for DH to come home and we each put them in a shopping cart. Or If I need wipes, or diapers, we go to Costco.

The days of leisurly shopping around the mall are over! They want to climb out of the stroller, they want to grab everything off the hangers, they want to walk on their own (read take off). I miss the infant carrier snapped into a double stroller days.

  • My favorite grocery store has the double carts, thank goodness, but one time the store manager was manning the checkout line I was in, and I told him how great the double carts are when you have twins.  And he said that they bought them a few years ago when a mother of twins called their customer service line and said that she wanted to shop there, but couldn't because they didn't have double carts.  So, one thing to consider is contacting your local target or other stores you want to go to often and asking them to get double carts.
  • Our target has the cart w/ 2 seats in it, where you can strap them in and then the cart part is separate.
  • When you figure out a way, let me know.  I've resorted to all errands on weekends, at night, or when they go to bed.
  • Ginger, do you have a SBS? Mine were pissy in the tandem too, but they do much better in the SBS. We don't let them have their leashes on in the stroller bc then they think they can get out. They grab things, but I have just accepted that I have to tell them no. A lot. Jessica's idea about giving them something to hold works too; I carry a pack of graham crackers and give them a cracker before we get in the store. Helps keep grubby mitts off things!

  • DH and I both work FT so we usually run errands on the weekends.  Our only triple stroller is the jogger which won't work in stores.  We keep 2 in the double stroller and 1 in the shopping cart.  My girls are afraid to get out of the stroller in stores - probably b/c the last time they did, a "scary" man tried to measure their feet for shoes at Stride Rite.  Works for me!

Ditto!  I go to Target at least once a week because of the carts there.  I also need the one to have the front for Chris.  I have put them both in the basket part but obviously you can't get much in there then.  I have put one in the top and one in the basket.

  • I am thinking of calling Target and suggesting that they get a few double carts for their stores!
  • I put them in the stroller, and pull a cart behind me. I find that if i feed them a snack along the way they do way better.

I have tried one of those carts that fits 3, two next to each other, and the other sit in the regular seat. It worked well, problem is that they are not ready available in the parking lot when i have to unload them.

  • The past week or two DH and I have been taking them in the store with out a stroller or cart.  I am trying to get them to understand rules and consequences.  I want to be able to take them out by myself in a few months so hopefully what I am trying to do now will pay off.  Every time we pull up to the store I ask them if they want to walk or get in the stroller.  Obviously they say walk so I tell them they have to hold our hand or else we will have to go bye bye.  They try to pull away a couple of times while in the store but I just lean down and tell them I am going to have to pick them up and we are going bye bye.  Typically they will say no and then ask for my hand.  I am hoping in the next few months I will be able to take them out by my self safely (might be wishful thinking).  I have also thought about getting a sit and stand stroller.  I know that it would be tight for them to both stand on the back but I think they would LOVE it and think it is fun.  Mine are almost two and I have a feeling the stoller days are going to come to an end soon.  This is a really tough situation for moms of twins!!  I wish I had the right answer!

  • Most of the time I fly through the store these days.  Mine have lost their patience with sitting in the stroller but the only store around here with a double shopping cart is BJs so I have to use the stroller.  I pretty much feed them the entire time.  That keeps them happy for the most part.  If they start to get nutty I grab something random off the shelf and let them hold it.
  • I'm lucky that my kids like the stroller.  I do all my shopping with them in the stroller and my reusable bags hanging from the handles.  If I need something bulky I either grab that last or I go on my own to get it at night or on the weekend.  They love going to BJs because they have the double shopping cart there.  I tried putting them in the car in the front of a car once but that only lasted for a little while.  Thank God that cart also had the double seat...they were quickly moved to it!
