What did you pack to go to the hospital

I thinking I should get going on this but don't know where to start.  I know I'm going to end up bringing more than I need (I'm that girl who brings 57 suitcases for a weekend trip...)  Did you dress the baby in clothes you purchased during their entire stay, or did you just bring a going home outfit?

Re: What did you pack to go to the hospital

  • We just brought a going home outfit. We were there 5 days, and she just stayed in the hospital shirts w/ a diaper.

One thing that we brought, almost by accident, but ended up being so helpful was a sweatshirt for DH. During labor I was burning up, so I kept having them crank the air up. Apparently everyone else was freezing. Who knew?
One of the nurses told DH that it's pretty common, and all the nurses keep jackets / sweaters at their station.

I would also recommend flip-flops or the like for you to come home in. They pumped so much fluid into me that when I left I couldn't get my shoes on. Even my socks were cutting into my ankles.

We only brought a going home outfit. DD was a preemie so she wore all hospital provided outfits up until we left. Going home outfit was large but it was what we had already planned.

Othe items we had were camera, camcorder, outfits for us, phones, chapstick (lips got a little raw), magazines, & deck of cards.

    Good luck it flies by!

  • I ended up bringing way too much with delivery of DD. Here is what I am planning to bring this time around based on what I used last time.

    Socks

    Flip flops and slippers

Light weight sweat shirt jacket (liked this to wear with the hospital gown when we had people stop by)

Tolietries/a few makeup items/hairbrush/pony tail holders

    A couple nursing bras

Loose/comfy outfit to come home in

Coming home outfit for baby (DD wore clothes they provided in the hospital the whole time except for the day she went home)

People to call list including insurance info/pedi info

    A book to read

They provide you with mesh panties/pads in the hospital which I recommend using so you don't mess up your own. I just wore a hospital gown the whole time as well instead of my own clothes then brought a lightweight sweat shirt zip up jacket for when people visited.

DH brought clothes to sleep in and then went home during the day to shower, change, etc.

Also stock up on all the stuff they give you for the baby. Diapers, wipes. formula, nose sucker, receiving blanket, etc. and take it home with you.

  • The very best thing I took was some Charmin. The hospital toilet paper is rough in the best of circumstances. After delivery, the Charmin was a lifesaver. I took a robe and slippers. Other than that I wore hospital gowns. I also took Crocs for the shower. I also took a few snacks. Those were nice to have. DD wore the hospital shirts except when she had her picture taken and when we went home. Those were different days, so we had two outfits for her.

  • Besides the standard toiletries, socks, camera, etc. I was so glad to have a pair of comfy pants that didn't have an elastic waistband and a cotton robe to cover up with when people came to visit. It was freezing in our room.

    Also:
    Snacks

warm clothes for Mike (and next time, maybe a blanket)

    flip flops

    nursing tank

two pillows-one for me, one for him

And ditto taking all the freebie diapers, pads, etc. that the hospital gives you.

Next time around, I'll write down my medical history and take it with, because even though we pre-registered they still ask you the same stinkin' series of questions over and over, and when you're in labor, it's no fun trying to remember med dosages!

  • I also brought my own Charmin as well.  It was probably the most useful thing that I brought.

Flip flops definitely- my feet were so swollen from the fluids that I could barely get my shoes on.

I didn't pack my Boppy but I made DH's parents get it from our house and bring it.  The hospital pillows are so flimsy that they were no help at all getting DD positioned correctly to nurse.

    Snacks.

    Everyone else has great suggestions.

  • The things I actually used and will take next time:

    Robe/Slippers/Socks

I took a nightgown that was easy to nurse in.  It didn't get messy and it was nice to get out of the gown.

Lots of pillows...DH had to go home to get more of our own because most hospital ones suck and I had a c-section and it was hard to get comfy.

    Camera/Video Camera

All basic toiletries - I didn't get all fancy, but it was nice to put a little makeup on and feel normal when I had visitors.  Which I had all the time because I work at the hospital I delivered at.

For Ds we took going home outfit, picture outfit and some socks.  He wore hospital clothes the rest of the time.

    Pillow/Clothes/Blanket for DH

Next time I won't pack extra clothes for myself...since it will be a repeat c-section, it's too hard to put on pants because they are always checking your incision.

  • everyone pretty much has it covered...but i wanted to say that i wish we brought extra pillows.  dh and i are both pillow people and the ones that the hospital provided left something to be desired to say the least.  also, to answer your question, dd stayed in the hospital provided clothes until we were leaving.  bring a couple outfits for baby b/c even the newborn clothes can be big.  kat was 7 pounds 1 ounce and some of them were huge on her.
