Do newborns know when they are full?

Maren is already taking 3 oz at a time for her bottles (every 2.5-3 hours during the day and 3-4 hours at night).  She is still sucking at the bottle once it is empty.  While she doesn't appear to be upset when we take the empty bottle out of her mouth, she would definitely drink more if it were offered.  I found a formula on line that tells you how much a baby should take based on weight (multiply weight by 2.5 to 2.7 and that gives you the range.)  She is eating within that range or maybe slightly more.  I just wonder if her body is not registering that she is full.  She does not spit up or give me any indication that she is over eating though.

  • I bottle fed DD and they'll def tell you if they need more or are done. : )

  • Theoretically, yes, she should know when she's full.  I had to abandon the guidelines with both of my kids because they were just big eaters.  If she is not spitting up, I'd say you're reading her pretty well.

  • They do.  From like 2 weeks on DD started taking 3oz at a time. We were shocked. Then she started taking 6oz at 5weeks old.  We couldn't believe how much she could eat.  It has totally leveled out though, now at 5 months she still only takes 6oz per feeding.
  • I think some do and some do not.  I do not think Ty and Brooke did, especially Brooke.  Ethan, definitely did.
