When to move up diaper size?

How do you know when it's time to move up a size in diapers?

DD has been in newborn diapers. We started out with Pamper's Swaddlers and liked those, but they seemed to fall off her bottom very easily at the beginning. Someone had given us a couple packages of Huggies NB Gentle Care, so she has been wearing thosee for the last two weeks.

Lately it seems like she "blows out" her diaper at least once a day, sometimes multiple times a day. Today I've had to change her clothes twice (and it's not even noon yet) because the diaper can't hold everything in.

DD is 8.5 pounds now and still 22 inches long. Wonder if it's time to move up to size 1? Or is it just the Huggies?

Re: When to move up diaper size?

  • We have used both the pampers and huggies, and really prefer the pampers.  We moved up to 1's when it just seemed like the newborn were too small.  They started getting harder to put on her and more snug.  We never had the blow out problem really.  You could always put a 1 on her and see how it does...maybe you have a pack you received from a shower?  I have to say we are so fortunate!  We still have not bought a single pack of diapers!  We got that many before she arrived!!!

  • I'm not a big fan of Huggies - we tried some when Jenna was first born and they just didn't seem to do the job like Pampers.  I would definitely try a size 1 and see if that helps.  They do seem HUGE at first (when you switch sizes)!
  • I hate Huggies!  I can not tell you how many times they leaked in the middle of the night with Caleb.  I love the Pampers Swaddlers/Cruisers, but also really like the Pampers Baby Dry (you get more diapers per package for the same amount of $).  But, even with the Pampers, I always knew it was time to go up a size when they started leaking.  I would try size 1 and switch to Pampers if I were you.
  • Blow outs and leaks are a sure sign of an improper fit - it has always been 'fixed' for us by moving up a size.

And FWIW - Avery has always gone up a diaper size BEFORE she exceeds the weight limits - and sometimes even before the lowest weight recommendation of the next size.

Thanks! We've got a ton of Pamper's size 1 from one of our showers.. so I went ahead and put her in one of those a little while ago. Yall ar eright, they do seem huge! But hopefully they will keep everything in a lot better.
