Moms of Jacks

Any issues with the popularity of the name Jack? It's been a top choice of mine for years (especially since it has family meaning), but I'm discouraged by how often I hear it these days.

Re: Moms of Jacks

  • My son's name is Jackson and we call him Jack. Fortunately, Jack isn't as popular in my hometown. The name also had family significance for us, too. If you like it, just go with it and don't worry about the "popularity" of the name.

  • I have to admit, I roll my eyes when I hear a name like that, IF the parents are telling us the name as if it's really original. But the name itself is a cute name, and it's less trendy than Jackson IMO.

I hear ya. I've loved the name since I was a teenager, and go figure it would become uber popular around the time I'd actually be able to use it lol. If it weren't a significant name, I'd say "oh well" and move on to our other top choice. Easier said than done!

  • We named our son Jackson, and call him both Jack and Jackson. The name is popular, but not overly IMO.

We picked it because we loved that the name is classic and can grow with him, and it suits him perfectly. I wouldn't change a thing!

  • My son's name is Jack. I have only heard of one other one in our area. I always get compliments on his name too. It's just such a great, strong name. GL!
  • Ive always wanted to use the name Jackson, with nn Jack -- it has family ties for us - my dad's name is Jack and my grandfather's nn was Jack. I had no idea it was so popular and on all the lists (I dont really know anyone who has named their kid that). It bugs me a little but still plan on using it if we have a boy due to the family significance for us.
  • Why not name him John (or another stand-alone name) and call him Jack?

No matter how popular it is, I'll never think of Jack as a stand-alone name.  It is a nickname.  Naming a child Jack is the same as naming him Mike, Matt, or Jeff.

If you name him John/Jackson/James/etc., you could call him Jack, which is great, since it has family meaning.  Then, you won't have to worry as much about the popularity issue (since it's an NN), and he'll have a professional name that will work on a resume someday.

LOL, I loved Lilly in high school but won't touch it now. But it doesn't have any significance for me,like what you said with the family name.

And I do think Jack is classic--but Jackson is not. Do you know anyone over the age of 15 named Jackson? :) It's a cute enough name but classic it ain't.

If there is a James, John, etc. to go with, I would do that as PP said. Otherwise, what the heck.

  • I actually heard the name Jackson from Steel Magnolias- Julia Roberts husband in the movie..

  • It's only #50 on the SSN ranking.  Not saying it's unique or anything but there are many more common names than Jack.

I disagree with this. I think Jack has become a stand alone name. If I have a DS he will be named Jack after DH. This was agreed on almost the first week we were dating.
