Basil and oregano to induce labor?

My surgeon suggested looking up natural way of inducing since he is fearing my gallbladder is getting worse, yet my OB WILL NOT induce until 39 wks. Anyway, I was doing some research and came across oregano and basil, as in pizza or eggplant parmasean or something. I've never been a believer in any of this stuff, but this one kind of makes me wonder....

With DS, I was 35 wks, 6 days, and we went to dinner at a great Italian place. I had some of DH's pizza, eggplant parmsean, and delicious garlic bread, all with a TON of fresh oregano and basil. Then we went to one of those Home-a-rama things where you walk through the houses and tour them. I did all 10 houses, up and down all 10,000 sq ft of each house! My water broke within 24 hours.

I wonder if I should try this again (the restauarant is about an hour from us) or if it was just a coincidence. Maybe it couldn't hurt because the place IS delicious!  It'll for sure give me a gallbladder attack though....haha! I guess I'll have to have my Vicodin and Pepcid handy!

Re: Basil and oregano to induce labor?

  • There's some restaurant (I think in NY?) that has been on the news in recent months for the success rate of women who go into labor within 72 hours of eating their Eggplant Parmesan.

This only worries me now because I cook a LOT of Italian food and LOVE fresh basil -- have some on my balcony to shred up tonight with some tomatoes and mozzerrella in pasta....I don't want the baby to come too early b/c DH will be out of town for my 37th week.  Maybe I'll have to give up Italian the week before he goes and while he's gone, just to be safe....

  • Oh, and here is a little piece of the article talks about a restaurant in Georgia that has caused 300 some women to go into labor, but over like 20 some years, but still.....

    Labor Inducing Eggplant Parmesan

One of the methods of self-inducing labor that's been sweeping the internet in recent years is the myth that eggplant will start labor. This maternity myth started when a news story began circulating about a restaurant in Georgia named Scalini's. Apparently the mothers of over 300 babies have gone into labor in the past 23 years, within 48 hours of eating the eggplant parmegiana.

The funny part is, it may just be that the dish causes the women to go into labor, but it's not the eggplant. The herbs Oregano and Basil have properties that may cause contractions, though it is not yet known how or in what quantities. This is why, in aromatherapy circles, these herbs and essential oils are to be avoided whenever possible during pregnancy.

  • Hmmmmm........ I think I'm going to try this tonight!!  I'm so ready for my lil baby to come out! Stick out tongue
  • My SIL just told me about this pizza in CA that all these pregnant women were eating to try to bring on labor. She said it had to do with some kind of herbs on it. How weird that you just wrote something about that too.
