Cincinnati Babies

Rec. your Car / SUV

Hey Girls,

I'm thinking of trading my car in for something more "baby friendly" for when the time comes.  Right now I have a 2 door Chevy Cobalt Sport, while it's a really nice car, great on gas, etc...  I think having a 2 door car with a baby / carseat, etc.. will be a major pain in the ***??

So, we were thinking of trading in the cobalt for something 4 door either car or suv that is great on gas.  What do you have or recommend?

Thanks in advance and I hope you had a great Mother's Day!!  :)

Re: Rec. your Car / SUV

  • I would def. get a bigger car.  I have a Honda Pilot (used to have an Accord) and I am sooooo glad I have the Pilot now.  I can't imagine trying to get all the baby stuff in a car.  It gets pretty good gas mileage and is just a great car overall.  We got a great deal on a used Pilot- paid the same as my Accord new.  I have had a Civic, Accord and a Pilot so overall I would recommend Honda.

  • I bought a Mazda 5 about a month ago and love it. It is a small crossover that has the features of a mini van. Sliding doors, bucket seats in the 2nd row, third row that you can fold down for a decent cargo area. 3 sets of airbags which was important for safety. I traded in my Scion XB for this since I needed something with bigger cargo for a double stroller but didn't want to get a mini van or SUV that wasn't as good on gas milage as my XB. I get about 23-25 mpg with the Mazda and was getting around 24-27 with my XB so not a huge difference in my gas budget. You can get a great deal on a new 5 too. I ended up finding an 09 that someone traded in after 5 months for a great deal so bought used. I think the new ones you can get around the $17k price range.
  • I have a Honda CR-V and love it.  Granted I don't have kids yet, but I have used it for moving, carrying nieces and nephews around and whatnot and never had an issue.  It gets great gas mileage and has a lot of room.  Mine is kind of old (2001), but I've never had a major maintenance issue and will probably get another one once I run this one into the ground.
  • We love our Toyota RAV4.

For me, it's the perfect size to have DD in. And there's plenty of room in the back for her stroller, etc. And... it's small enough to be well, small - yet big enough to be comfy for DH, at 6'7".

    We average about 25 mpg.
  • I have a Toyota RAV4 too and love it.  It is on a Corolla frame I think so it drives and handles like a small car. But it is perfect for someone who is short like I am and for my husband who is a bit taller.  The gas mileage is decent and the inside and trunk area is plenty spacious.

I drove a Corolla before that and liked it too but I hated having to bend down to get the baby in and out of his seat and I could fit his stroller in the trunk but I had to really wrangle with it and had no room for anything else.

  • Here's a 3rd recommendation for the Toyota RAV 4.  Big enough to get DS in and out of easily.  Plenty of room for the stoller in the back.  DH drives it easily, and gets good mileage.  I would definitely get something bigger, DH drives a 2 door and hates it.  He doesn't have DS in his car that often, but when he does he says it's terrible trying to get his carseat in.

I'm a Toyota girl.  I drove 2 corollas for several years, and am now on my 2nd Camry.  A while back I posted a similar question, and I'll try to find you the link.  We thought about something bigger, but we just really like the camry.  We do have plenty of room for DS too.

We're leasing this camry (as we did the last one too).  Got it for $25/mo less than the camry I leased 3 years ago.  Same car... just newer and fewer miles.

  • I highly recommend the Honda CR-V (new body style is what I have).  It's great with gas and I just love it!
  • We love our Highlander. ?The gas mileage is comparable to the Camry I used to have. ?Right around 25 mpg. ?But you can increase that a bunch if you are willing to invest the extra cash in the Hybrid. ?

FWIW: I have a friend with a Ford Escape Hybrid and while she's happy with the gas mileage, she's pretty bummed at the size and wishing she had gotten something larger.
