How do I fix this? Do I need to re-potty train?

I thought I had potty trained DS in March.  He started wearing undies full time then (diapers for nap and night) and he knows how and uses the potty for both pee and poop. At first, I put him on the potty at regular times when I knew he would need to go, he was not telling me when he needed to go.  After a couple weeks, he learned to tell me when he needed to go for both pee and poop.  He still always tells me for poop, but he very rarely tells me when he needs to pee.  I still take him to the potty at the regular times and he's still wearing undies.  He isn't having full on accidents, but he will "leak" a little in his undies if it has been too long.  I'm not sure if he just doesn't want to take the potty breaks, or if he somehow isn't associating the feeling with it anymore.  Part of me thinks he's just being stubborn, because if he didn't know the feeling, I would think he'd have full-on accidents instead of holding it and just leaking a little until I take him to the potty.  In any case, he has been in undies now for 2 months and it seems to me that he should be telling me on a regular basis when he needs to pee instead of me telling him when to go.  I'm not sure what to do.  I tried a sticker chart for keeping undies dry all day, but so far its only working a little - he seems excited about it, but still not telling me when he needs to go.  Ideas?  Do I need to re-train somehow?

  • My DS did the same thing and OMG was it frustrating!  Basically, they learn they can hold it, but haven't really learned how long they can hold it for.  Usually they figure out a little too late.  And, b/c they're 2-4 y/o, they're all about doing it themself and being independent, so they may not want to go when you suggest its time.  The only thing that worked for us was to give it time, ease up on the pressure and control to use the potty and let him have accidents and clean up after himself.  My DS has been PT'd for 9 mos now and had a huge accident at the mall today.  I totally knew it was going to happen, took him to the bathroom 2x and he refused to go.  He had to wear wet pants out to the car, so hopefully he learned his lesson.
