I saw you posted below that you got the triumph carseat...does it work well in your audi?  We have an a4 and I need to get a carseat that will actually allow a passenger to ride in the car too (with the carseat in the back behind the passenger i mean).

Yes! We have the A3 and I had an A4 loaner last time I had it in for service. The backseat of the A4 is slightly larger than mine, so I'm sure if it works in mine it will work in yours. I can sit back there relatively comfortably and buckle the seatbelt. When we had the snugride in there I couldn't get in at all.

On second thought maybe I misread your post, but my answer is still the same. We keep it in the middle but we did try it out on the passenger side before we bought it and it works that way, too.
