Babies: 9 - 12 Months

avocado allergy/intolerance?

This is a repost from 0-6 since more of you all are probably feeding solids than the 0-6-ers.

When we started solids last weekend, DS had 5 days of rice cereal, and went as swimmingly as it could go for his age (starting early on advice of the pedi to possibly help with his reflux).

After 2 days of avocado (thinned with BM), we've had 2 evenings as miserable as when he had colic. Crying, screaming, seemingly out of the blue, and he seems pretty gassy.

DH thinks he's having breathing problems, too, but I think it's just his normal post-crying weird breathing/hiccuping.  No vomiting, his poo is relatively normal (though green), no hives or visible sores in his mouth.  But, we can't ask him directly if he has a tummyache, a headache, itchy mouth, etc.

The only other thing is both of the last 2 nights I was out at school events I couldn't miss. I left DH with a sleeping baby both evenings, and came home to very sad reports.  Maybe he just misses me?

Anyone else's LO have an avocado reaction?  I may reports this on 6-12 if not too many people here are on solids yet.

Thanks!!!

Re: avocado allergy/intolerance?

  • A friend of mine's  baby is allergic to avocado.

My son was super gassy and up all night with sweet potatoes.  I'd try something else.

  • My girlfriends baby broke out in hives from it. I would just stop and try it again in a couple months.
  • Thanks, you guys, I think we'll move on to sweet potatoes.  I read that if a baby has an reaction to avocado, he is more likely to have a reaction to bananas, which is what we'd planned to intro next.

Thanks, and I'll check back in the morning in case others wake up and have more insight :)

  • DD had gas after avocado, so we waited and tried again after a month. She seems ok now.  Now oatmeal is another story.  Every time she eats oatmeal she is up at 4:00 a.m.  As a side note, bananas are known to cause constipation and rice cereal combined with bananas makes "cement" in the belly, according to my pedi.  I learned this the hard way (so to speak!):)

Both rice cereal and avocado are binders and culprits of constipation.  Combining the two may be making it painful for him.  Switch to oatmeal baby cereal and try pears to help with the constipation.  Avoid avocado for a month and then try again.
