Baby Names

What do you think of the name Nico?

DH pulled this one out last night.  We have a really long, very Italian-sounding last name.  Middle name is supposed to be Dominic (my FIL), but DH said "We should name him Dominic and call him Nico".

When I hear the name Nico I think of a  very tanned man with gold chains, shirt unbuttoned too far and a hairy chest.  It's amazing how a name just brings out a picture in your mind!!

Am I wrong?  Is Nico a name that can rise above this "image"??  I KNOW that there have to be some super cute Nico's out there, right???

Re: What do you think of the name Nico?

  • I actually would prefer the nickname Dom to Nico.... But Nico's not terrible. Kind of sounds like a dog's name to me. Don't know why.

The only Nico I knew was from Jersey, tanned, gold chains & shirt unbuttoned too far (he was 18 at the time, so not so much with the hairy chest), but he was Greek-American.  LOL.  Nonetheless, I like the nn.

  • I love Dominic. I do not like Dom at all. I like Nico a lot on its own or as a nn.

  • Nobody said Nico Suave yet? (think late 80s/early 90s) Reminds me of Nicotine also. But it's not a bad name. I do like that it's not popular.

  • Girl's name.

    Girl's name.

?? Just b/c a character on a cancelled TV show had it? Or is there another reason you say this? Of course it can be a nn/variation for Nicole/Nicolette/Nicola, but by no means is it just a "girl's name."

LOL... I said this too, but it's actually RICO Suave.  But this was one of my comments to DH as well :)

  • I don't think of gold chains or anything, if that makes you feel better! That didn't occur to me at all. I think it's fine :)

  • I love this name - we were going to use this name and nn at one point, but we know several adults and children called Dominic and Nicholas, so we felt weird using it.  However, it doesn't bring up this image at all for me.  Instead it sounds very cool and international to me! :)
  • I really love the name Dominic (it was on my boys list) and Nico isn't a bad n.m, I like it.

DH used to be a nanny for a REALLY cute boy named Nicholas but was called Nico... It is traditionally a Greek name... but I thought it was adorable! Go for it! :)

I like it. But I think Neko Case or Nico the (female) singer with Velvet Underground.

    Neither of those are bad.

I like Dominic, and I like Nico as a NN for that.

I knew a guy in high school named Nico. He was so arrogant, rude, self righteous, and mean spirited. I despise the name because of this guy. He was 16 and had liver disease because he drank so much. Obviously, I have a bad taste in my mouth, but he's the only person I've ever met named Nico so this is what I think of.?

This is exactly what I picture!

  • I love the name Nico!  But it just doesn't fit with our name or heritage.

FWIW, the only Nico I've met IRL was an adorable little boy from an Italian family  :)

  • I'm a bit biased, but I think my son is a super cute Niko. We are Greek. I do not picture the same thing you do when I hear the name, as it is a very popular Greek name and I hear it all of the time. We named DS after DH's father and St. Nicholas. His full name is Nikolas. I have never thought of it as a NN for Dominic, but that could be cute. I prefer the spelling with a K (Niko). Our son has only ever gotten compliments on his name.

  • I don't think of a boy at all, BUT only because I had a cousin named Nicoletta, and we called her Nico. So my answer doesn't count!
  • I have a very cute Nicolas in my class that goes by Nico. I love it because it's not the typical "Nick" or "Nicky". ?He's actually one of the brightest kids I have taught, and he's very outgoing and charismatic! So I don't think of gold chains and a hairy chest when I thikn of that at all! :-)?
  • i love it.  but i also have a son named rocco, so....LOL
