Did they say why they won't get the dog back? Were they mistreating him? I can't imagine they would keep the dog away from them if he was loved and well taken care of. I hate sad animal stories.
From the original news story, I think the family just wanted to get their dog back, but couldn't afford the $200. I guess the shelter thinks that even if people donated money to get the dog out, the family cannot afford to care for the dog.
I'm probably in the minority, but I'm glad they are not getting the dog back. Apparantly the dog has been in pain with its ear condition, and the family has not been able/unwilling to have the surgery done for it. I know times are tight, but I put my animals needs before my own. Thats part of my responsibility of being a pet owner. I'm very glad some one came forward and is offering this poor dog a second chance.
I'm glad the dog is okay.... I would hate to see an animal mistreated.
However (and this is NOT directed towards you wonderful ladies... just a general comment) it seems to me whenever there's a story in a magazine, on TV, about an animal being mistreated calls and mail flood the office. (and that's a good thing! I'm glad there are caring people out there)
and then there was a story about a man who threw a toddler out a window on a highway... the baby died. And didn't get near the same amount of attention. There's something very wrong with that. It seems to happen all of the time. Do you see my point? And again, not in any way saying that an animal should be mistreated or people shouldn't stand up for our furry friends. It just seems there is so much more attention, activists, etc for animals. But what about our babies and children?

See, that's the thing. He wasn't well taken care of. The reported said she interviewed the person that picked up the dog and she said she could tell the dog was sick by just looking at it.
There had to be ear mites or something wrong with the dog's ears to cause him to shake his head so much that the blood vessels in the ear burst causing the ear flaps to blow up like balloons because they were filling with blood.
I am glad they are not getting the dog back. I felt sorry for them in the beginning, but the more information they shared, the less sad for them I was and more sad for the dog. Their house didn't even look livable for a dog, much less a human.
Re: update on news story below
Here's the update if you didn't get to watch.
The family won't get their dog back, but it won't be euthanized. A Stray Animal Adoption Agency will pay for the surgery and find the dog a new home.
Still sad that the family won't get their dog back.
