I just had to share- went in to the post office this afternoon to mail some stuff. I'd just barely walking into the line (15-20 seconds tops) when the woman in front of me turns around and very rudely demands I trade places with her. Didn't ask, demanded.
I thought maybe she had forgotten something and needed to go back to her car. Nope. As she moves behind me she says very loudly, 'I just can't bear to be up there listening to you pop your gum like that. It's unbelievably rude.'
Seriously stunned me! I had just barely walking into the line seconds before and had not even been aware that I had snapped my gum! Snapping gum is not a habit of mine, it was a pet peeve of my mom's so I'm aware of it and don't do it. Besides, would it be sooooo less obvious from one place in line behind me?
I turned back around and very calmly said 'Wouldn't it have been easier to just mention that the sound of popping gum bothers you and asked me to stop, instead of attacking a complete stranger and ruining both of our afternoons?'
Her response- 'That ruined your afternoon? Everybody knows that popping gum is rude. You should have better manners in public'.
The guy behind her gives me this look like- WTF? At this point I'm about ready to lose it so I turn back around and just ignore her.
Then, NO SH!T!!, as soon as I turn around her cell phone rings and she carries on a lengthy, loud and pretty personal phone call in the middle of the post office. Like five minutes worth! The little devil on my shoulder got the better of me and I turned back halfway and said 'and thats not at all rude...'
The guy behind her starts laughing, and her response 'Not nearly as invasive as what you were doing!' and goes back to her phone call.
WTF?? You should all be proud, it took *extreme* discipline, but I resisted the urge to pop my gum the rest of the time I was in line. No sense sinking to her level.
Arrgggg!
Re: Evidently snapping gum= worst thing ever!
Yeah, I probably would have been immature and totally smacked and snapped my gum...in the hopes she'd just leave. I proud of you for not doing it - that took a lot of willpower, I'm sure!
Just realize that she probably is a miserable person. People like that just can't help but lash out at everyone to share their misery. Luckily, you only had to deal with her for a few minutes. Imagine someone like that being family! Or a co-worker! UGH!
What a piece of work.
People have no manners these days.
::and with that adjusts sweater, pearls, knee highs and glasses on chain::
You're a better woman than I am. I would have sunk to her level.?
I was *so* tempted! After I left and the adrenaline rush slowed down I thought of so many things I wished I had said to her...
Thanks for the support ladies!
