3rd Trimester

Puking during Glucose tolerance test??

Hi ladies, I am new to 3rd trimester...yay!!!  My husband and I are so happy to have made it here, 6 weeks ago I was in possible danger of delivering our little one from PTL.

Okay, I looked back in the pages and searched for this and didn't get a great answer....

How many of you got nauseated to the point of vomiting during your 1 hour glucose test?  I live an hour away from the office and I was going to drive myself...but I am rethinking this because people are talking about passing out and/or puking.  I also was going to take a zofran before going...I have a really sensitive stomach.  So to recap, who threw up if anybody.

Re: Puking during Glucose tolerance test??

  • I got sick myself and felt pretty crappy the rest of the day but ended up passing with flying colors.

Have someone drive you just to be safe. Good luck!

  • I didn't puke but I did get really dizzy and nearly passed out.  I never would've thought I couldn't drive myself to that appointment, but I'm glad I didn't.  I was really off for the rest of the day.

  • I didn't. Especially when they tell you that you'll have to start over if you do!
  • First time I did it, I felt like I was going to throw up, but didn't. I just pinched me nose and it helped. The one I did this time (2 yr later) was not nearly as thick....they lady said they changed them. But I only had 5 minutes to chug it, so anything would have made me sick. I brought my mom along to drive and really I ended up feeling fine. Just keep thinking......if I puke, I have to start over. That was my motivation....GL!

    oh and THIS

  • I felt light headed and naseauted during the one hour, it went away after about 10 minutes though. I definitely wasn't going to vomit though.
  • I made it through the 1 hour, but threw up when I took the 3 hour. I had to go back, and I threw up again. Doesn't surprise me that happened since I still have all-day sickness. Now I have to monitor my levels at home, just to be on the safe side.
  • I had mine yesterday and I did get a little quesy but I just walked around and got fresh air. Now my hospital said if I did throw up I would have to re-take the test. But I didn't pass out or anything like that and its really not bad don't worry about it the more anxiety you have the worse it will go! GOOD LUCK

  • I felt very sick during and after the test...more so weak than anything else...they did an ultrasound while we were waiting for that hour to be up (since I saw a new doctor) and when I was lying back I got very dizzy and felt like I was going to throw up...
  • I was fine - it was just basically 10 oz of orange pop.  Did not taste gross at all, and didn't make me dizzy or anything.  Do you get dizzy if you drink sugary drinks on an empty stomach (like a coke or something?)  Maybe use that to gauge if you will need a back up plan.

I was told I could eat up to an hr. beforehand, so I had some eggs for breakfast first, maybe that helped me.

I never even considered having someone drive me.

  • I didn't have any issue with either the glucola for the 1 hour (50 grams sugar) or the 3 hour (100 grams of sugar).
  • I got sick about an hour after the test was all over. I went out to lunch with my friend and got sick after eatiing...Then later I passed out :(

  • I know it's lame, but what if you drank your drink in the parking lot of the doctor's office and brought a book that way you have less of a chance of puking.

    It worked for me.

  • I did not et sick, but I have heard of some people feeling like it, so I guess that just depends on the person. I also drove myself, but might have rethought that if I had to do it again. I did feel pretty tired and crappy for some hours afterward, and I don't know if drving was the best thing.

     Good Luck!

  • I was completely fine. I think a lot of people overdramatize the whole thing.
  • Thanks ladies, I do tend to get sick when I drink or eat sweets on an empty stomach....I think I'm going to have someone drive me just in case.  Thanks again!

  • I felt fine with the drink for the 1 hour glucose. ?i barely failed that and had to take the 3 hour (which I passed). ?That drink was a higher concentration of sugar than the 1 hour, and I was very close to puking - I forced myself to think about something else because I knew if i htrew up I'd have to take it again. ?good luck with the test, i hope you dont have to take the 3 hour!

  • I get violently ill with the 3hr.  I had to have mine done at L&D because I get so sick.

I'm completely fine with the 1hr though.  I think if I'm OK, most people will be OK!
