Flying with an infant

I tried looking on Delta's website but I couldn't find the info I was looking for.  Do I need to carry a birth certificate for Allie when we fly to Dallas in two weeks?  DH is flying with us if that makes a difference.

Also, do I need to let the airline know ahead of time that I will be traveling with an infant in arms or can I just tell them when I check in?

Re: Flying with an infant

  • I booked a flight and I listed her as an infant in arms when I purchased the ticket.

I'm not sure about bring her birth certificate. We aren't traveling until August.

  • We are flying to Florida in October and we told them (Delta) that we would be bringing an infant (in arms).  When we did that, they gave us a bunch of information...carseat checking, stroller, gate check, etc.  I believe they said we had to have her birth certificate, but I really didn't pay attention since we will be getting Kate a passport (going on a cruise).
  • When we flew with Ryan last July, we didn't need a birth certificate. And when we checked in at the kiosk thing we just checked that we would have an infant in arms.

  • We have flown twice with DD and you don't need a birth certificate but you do need to make sure they have it noted  on one of your tickets that you are traveling with an infant in your arms because some rows you can't sit in with an infant. They didn't note that last time on our ticket and we got up to security and they made us go back through ticketing to change it. It was so annoying!

  • You don't need a birth certificate to fly with an infant.  However, some airlines require it to prove that the infant is under 2 and thus isn't required to sit in their own seat.  But we've never been asked to show the girls' birth certificates, personally.

  • We've never had to have a birth certificate or any other identification for DD.  We flew Delta in Feb. and I forgot to list her as "infant in arms" when I booked our flights...they just added it to my ticket once I got to the gate.
  • Thanks ladies!  I booked the tickets through Orbitz and didn't even think about trying to add her on the ticket then.  It's good to know I can add her when we check in.
