DD has never been a big diaper rash baby, but it seems that everything that could happen while on this long vacation to FL has...including painful, icky diaper rash that started bleeding in spots this morning, We have been using desitin creamy on her every change, but she has also been super poopy (tmi but it's really thick and pasty, too)...I mean a change every 30 mins or so, and I think that might be increasing the issue with all the wiping. Soooo....we are away from home, can't really do no-diaper time here, and can't completely change over her diet to simple things since we are restaurant dependent...
What do you recommend for a thick, healing diaper rash ointment that we can switch to? Desitin creamy has always worked, but it just can't compete with all the wiping! Other suggestions would be great too, if you can think of something that can calm down all this pooping, Poor girl.
TIA
Re: help!!! Weeping bleeding diaper rash
My sister deals with this with her DD
1. put antibiotic ointment and bandaids on the bleeding spots if possible
2. Go to your pharmacy and ask them for diaper cream. I cannot remember the name but is very strong non RX and is kept behind the counter
Forgot to add...dont use wipes...get soft paper towels, get them wet and wipe with those
Put her on a BRAT diet to help with the loose stool (bannanas, rice, applesauce, toast)
Triple Paste! DD went through this a couple weeks ago and it helped sooo much! I rinsed out the wipes with warm water before I used them and that seemed to help a littl too.
GL. Hope your LO gets better soon.
Ben has had two diaper rashes like that and all the OTC stuff in the world didn't help. I had to take him to the pedi and get an Rx (Bactroban) - which cleared it up in a matter of a few days.
And ditto not using wipes. The pedi told us it just irritates it more. For his wet diapers when he had these rashes, we didn't do anything. For poopy diapers, we used wet paper towels. GL!
It could be a yeast infection. Sounds exactly like what my DD had a few weeks ago.?
Call your pedi today and them call in a RX for Nystatin. Also pick up hydrocortisone cream. The Nystatin is applied after every diaper change and the hydrocortisone is applied twice a day.?
Yes, but pedi also told me "dab, don't wipe" use dry disposable washcloths and water (or toilet paper if you're in a bind--just watch out for lint). If it is yeast, you will see it down the mid-line (genitalia and narrow band on the butt). Everyone tells me monistat is a miracle worker--just the regular kind you can get for feminine yeast infections in the store. We used nystatin + hydrocortisone, but it took a while to clear up. GL! (oh, and stop using desitin/zinc oxide. It sticks to the skin and causes the bleeding by pulling the skin off )
I would head to pedi if you can just to be sure which type of rash you're dealing with. As PP's have said, different types require different treatments.
I'm so sorry, that sounds awful!
If you have any soft washclothes or flannel you could cut up into wipes, that's what I use, with just warm water.
Can you go to a store and get some oatmeal and yogurt and bring it in an insulated carrier or cooler? Do not give her any more acidic foods like citrus, applesauce or tomato sauce. That definitely aggravates it a lot.
Re: diaper ointment, Does your pedi have a suggestion? Or maybe a dermatologist would have a prescription strength one that they can call into a pharmacy near where you're staying.
GL!!
ETA: what kind of wipes do yo use? Most have bleach, fragrance and chemicals in them that I'd think would make these types of things worse. Try Seventh Generation and see if they irritate her less.
eta again to un-ask question about pooping. I read wrong first time!
PLEASE do not give her applesauce. It is way too acidic. It makes the poop more acidic, hence more rash.
thanks! This is always the place that comes to mind when I need quick help! The only problem with no wipes is the sticky, thick poop she has right now,,,it sticks so firmly I have had to use 2 wipes! I will shift over to washcloths though with warm water, and have been using fragrance free ones up til now. We are lucky enough to be at a family home today that lets her have some no diaper time and she is currently napping on the pool deck with me in the shade, little bare bottom up in the breeze. Thank goodness!
I travelled with nystatin so will probably shift over to that in case it's yeast, and am on my way to babies r us to check out our disposable washcloth options or 7th generation wipes so we can get this under control. I appreciate the diet options too...I think she is swallowing lots of drool and phlem with teething and a cold now, so we're having this soft stool problem. Whew! As if parenting away from my husband (he's away at training so we are visiting family) wasn't hard enough!!
Thanks, and keep any more ideas coming!
