nipple clogs with thickened formula ?

i decided to try similac sensitive rs to see if it would help DS with his spitting up. it seems to be helping some, but we're running into some problems with it clogging in his bottles.  it seemed fine for the first few days, but the last few bottles we've prepared have been a joke. we tried medium flow nipples, but those seem a little fast for him. and then tonight we tried a fast flow (all the medium flows were in the dishwasher and we were desparate) and even that got clogged.

i figured if anyone had an idea how to stop this from happening, it would be you guys! any hints?

TIA!

Re: nipple clogs with thickened formula ?

  • We use Born Free bottles with the Variable flow nipple for his thickened formula.  The variable has slow, medium, and fast.  The flow DS gets depends on how the nipple is placed in his mouth.  For example, I usually feed him with the 2 drops printed on the nipple pointed towards the ceiling.  Overall, I think each flow on the variable is a little faster than it would be on the individual nipples.  We haven't had problems with clogging unless we don't mix it well.

We use rice cereal with Costco formula so we can adjust the thickness.

  • We use Dr. Brown's bottles and when we thickened DD's formula we used level 2 nipples and had no problems.  We don't thicken it anymore and we are using the level 1 nipples.

we used the cross cut Dr. Brown Nipples.  we had to add a thickening gel to her formula and this worked fine.
