I have always heard it as its own name. It's the Hebrew version of Sarah I believe.

I have a cousin that's much older than me named Mercedes, but I know that people in the family always called her Sadie.  As far as I know, Sadie is a common nn for Mercedes.

it originated as a nn for sarah but it is a stand alone name
