more on the name Kate

MrsKAP mentioned that if we name her Kate, she'll always be asked what her "real" name is. Can anyone think of a unique name that could be a "real" name for Kate that might have some connection to the Bahamas??? Like something that means ocean or sun or island or anything like that?

I know this is totally random but I'd really like to somehow name her for where she came from if I can. Maybe this is a way to do it without making her go through life with a really crazy name?

Re: more on the name Kate

  • Yeah, you will probably be asked that.....I actually get asked that a lot for some reason....my name is Amy, people are like, what is that short for?? HUH? ?Nothing...its just Amy. ?It doesn't really bother me that much.

I think if you like Kate then name her Kate....I can't think anything like you are asking for...I tried googling but didn't come up with anything except that "Kiss me Kate" was filmed in the bahamas in 2000....

  • Just a little thought...

If you were her, would you want to spend your whole life explaining that her real name is actually _____, which means _____, which is significant because she was conceived in the Bahamas?!?!

  • what if "she" is a "he" ???

  • Well in the bahamas, the tiny islands are called Cay(s) so you could use that.

There is a whole island in the Bahamas that is called Cat Island.

    There are always the Catamarans(boats).

    Just a few ideas.

    ?

I actually thought it was really cute when the little girl yesterday told me that her parents "got" her in the Bahamas. She was so proud. But I'm leaning towards just using Kate and maybe doing something more creative for the mn.

And May, I'd put money down that I'm having another girl!! Our boy name was always Ben, though, so I think we'll stay with that. I hope NCUbride doesn't mind that I'm stealing all her names! :)

  • Also, I'm Katherine and go by Katie.  Usually when people hear my full name they think it's so unfitting for my personality. They're usually say "really???"...

I think Kate is cute all by itself.  Did you ever see the Will & Grace episode with "Just Jack"... "Just Kate!"

And in a few years when that little girl realizes what "got" means she's going to be so grossed out!

  • My name is Katie too.  Just Katie.  I can only remember one time where somewhere really hounded me about what my real name was (stupid lady checking names for diplomas).  It's not that big of a deal.

I like Kate.  I also like Ben.  :)

  • I agree with Gemini about her knowing how she got her name. I really like the name Kate!!
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • I'm with Gemini on this one. I love the name Kate, its adorable but I don't think it has to be connected to the Bahamas and conceiving. It reminds me of that car commercial a few years back where the kid was named after the car she was conceived in and people didn't really know how to respond other than give the side eye and "ooooh".
  • I dont have any suggestions, but wanted to say that I love the name Kate.  Our girl name pick so far is Kaitlyn, with a nn of Kate or Katie.  :)

I've never been to the Bahamas, so I don't have any suggestions on that end.  I do love the name Kate, although I think it should be spelled with a C. Stick out tongue

  • I think Kate is good by itself. My sister named her kids longer names because she felt that the shortened versions were too short. She planned on calling them by nicknames(the names she originally liked for them). I personally think it would have been easier to just name them Jack and Shay instead of making the names longer.

Speaking of that, my nephew is Jackson. We all call him Jack and no one has asked yet what it's short for :)

  • I love the name Kate. And if I were you, her name would just be Kate. =)
  • My boys (DH and DS) are just John and we get asked if it's short all the time.  It's not a big deal though.  Explaining J5, now that's something I'm getting a little tired of.  Oh well!
