I think binky is VERY annoying. It's the same way some people say let's change your diapee instead of diaper. I personally prefer to use the real name of things.
Most people I know call if a binky. I'm not really sure about the meaning though.

Cutesy nickname, I have also heard it called a paci.... we called it a pacifier, but ds didn't have it long enough for him to need to ask for it. I can imagine that binky and paci are much easier for toddlers to say than pacifier.
we called it a paci while he took it. (all 3 mos of it) and then he just stopped taking them. Occassionally I called it a binky but thats what I grew up hearing. (That and binkum) Im not sure why they called it that though so DH and I just shortend pacifier to paci and often times would just ask for it by full name. I think we will do the same thing for the next one. Its just a nick name for 'em. Im guessing because it is easier to say.
And I bet half of you will start saying those annoying baby words once your baby is here. Baby talk actually helps babies learn to speak and understand language, so don't knock it too much. You'll all be doing it soon.

I had to crack up a little at this. My first thought was "good luck with that" If your DC takes a pacifier. DS is a thumb sucker and I told myself we would not give him the same blanket everyday because I didn't want him attached to one, so he won't be carrying a ratty nasty blanket. We have four we give but there is totally a favorite and I find myself giving it to him because it calms him down immediately. It is funny what changes when you have a screaming toddler on your hands. ESPECIALLY in public.

you might be right, but its something I feel pretty strongly about. Who knows if I'll do it exactly at one, but I promise you by the time they are in preschool it will be gone!
I cringe when I hear binky too. With my 1st we often called it a plug b/c we thought it was funny...if it fell out at night we'd say we had to get up and plug her back in. Otherwise I'd just call it a pacifier or paci around everyone but my immediate family.

My H's family calles it a shushie. I never wanted to use one, I think it looks ridiculous, but I was reading up on SIDS and it says a pacifier helps reduce the rate.

It's not so much the words you use (such as cutesy wootsie and so forth), but more the tone of voice- babies listen to and respond to that high pitched, melodic voice that all mommies seem to get the second they pop out of the womb. You can still speak proper English to your child and talk in a tone of voice that will enable them to learn to speak and understand language.

Word choice matters too. For example, speaking in the thid person is easier for them to understand than first and second person. Binky is easier than pacifier.
I also LOL at the poster who said she is taking the pacifier away when her baby turns one. GL.

Binky is a brand name. It is a pacifier made by Playtex. Just like the PP said about Nuk. It is a brand name too.
We always called it a Binky when I was little because it was the only kind of pacifier I would use. And yeah talk to my mom about trying to take it away at one. LOL.... didn't go so well. you might have better luck but I was a hard core case. I had one in my mouth and one in each hand until I was almost 3!!

I was more cracking up at myself for all the "i will never" things that DH and I talked about before DS was here. And I still have hope that there wont be a nasty ratty blanket.

oh wow- I feel the EXACT same way.
another thing that bothers me- seeing 4 and 5 year old's walking around with pacifiers. When my kid is 1, the pacifier is going
isn't that a brand name?
I cant stand binky or paci. It makes me nuts!!
Worse is in my family (they are azorian) they call it a shoosha (not spelled that way but best for you to understand phonetically).
Its ridiculous.
I have a friend like that. Drives me insane.
That's very possible. I guess it's like everyone calling tissues klenex (which is a brand name) instead of tissues
yep, I just looked it up, its made by Gerber. I thought I recognized it!

Is it bad that my family calls tampons, "plugs?"
That is terrible!

YES! I hate that word. Who started that? Let's poke them in the eye!
Doesn't it seem like if a kid is old enough to ask for a "binky" he is too old for it?
