Low/No VOC Paints?

Normally I wouldn't care much about this but since I'm cooped up at home all day and there are no windows in there, I was considering using this type of paint for the (hopefully) baby's room. Has anyone used any of these and do you recommend them? So far the Benjamin Moore Aura and the Olympia (at Lowe's) seem to have the best color selection, but if you've used another one that's easy to find and recommend it I'd love to hear about those too. Thanks!

Re: Low/No VOC Paints?

  • We used a Benjamin Moore Aura paint with no VOC's for the baby's room.  It may have smelled a little bit for one day, but that was it.  I could smell the new nursery furniture (wood smell, obviously) way more than I could smell the paint, so I'm glad we got it.  It was expensive though, I think $50 for a gallon.

  • we used Fresh Aire from Home Depot before, but their color selection isn't very good.  we used the sage-y color they have and it looks nice on our walls.

I think this goes for all no-voc paint that they don't cover as well (makes sense considering they've got less solids) and you have to do more coats.  But it did make a big difference in the smelliness of painting.

  • We used Benjamin Moore's no VOC paints.  They really are great as far as the fumes go - way better than the regular stuff.  But they are EXPENSIVE!  I was shocked when we went to check out - I'm pretty sure the Lowe's one isn't as bad - we used their primers and it also was great - no odors, etc.
  • We were at Lowe's last night buying nursery paint and they let us use a Valspar color in their low VOC offering -- I guess the Olympia.  They just mixed it right up.  And ya, it was super spendy so we also got a tinted primer so it would cover easier and it occurred to me that we probably nullified the low VOCs by using the tinted primer.  Oh well...

  • We also used BM's Aura line.

  • We used the low VOC paint from lowes. It was way cheaper than home depot and BM and they can mix any color, even custom. We only had to do 2 coats to cover which isn't any different from regular paint.

We used the olympic paint from Lowes.  It was pretty reasonably priced and definitely had no smell or fumes that I could tell.  I thought the coverage was pretty crappy though - it just didn't seem to stick and it took a whole gallon to do a tiny little room.  Even after 2 coats overa white there were a lot of areas that needed to be gone over - it almost was 3 coats and we just about ran out of paint.  But like pp said I think that has to do with being voc-free.

We used American Pride paint, no VOCs. ?We live in California and bought it at a hippy-dippy green home store, but I bet there is an American Pride website that would tell you where to find it. ?

Also, I was under the impression that they could mix any color of paint for you into a no VOC base. ?It is worth asking.?

  • I have used the olympia and sherwin williams...I think we actually liked the olympia better and it is less expensive...we painted the baby's room in two coats.   Olympia actually has very high consumer ratings too.
