Infertility

Prostatitis and Infertility

Hey everyone. I was wondering if anyone has gotten PG or knows if you can get PG if your husband has prostatitis? My fiance and I just found out that he has chronic prostatitis and I am worried. We arent TTC quite yet because we are waiting till we get married but I can't stop wondering how this will affect our chances when we TTC. Thanks!!!

Re: Prostatitis and Infertility

  • Have you talked to your dr. about this?

If I remember correctly, my dad had BPH for several years, including his reproductive years, and it never affected anything.

  • We haven't specifically asked a Dr about how it will affect his fertility but we have seen many different Drs about treating it. We didn't think too much about it being a problem, other than it is really painful for him, until I saw somewhere online that it could affect your fertility. I'm just not sure how serious this is. Prostatitis is so stubborn. It's really frustrating. He had one surgery done because it damaged his left epididymis and he had to have it completely removed. At the time we didn't suspect that he had prostatitis but now I'm starting to think that thats what ruined his epididymis. I just hope it doesn't ruin his other one or we are for sure screwed. Sorry I'm rambling. We have a Drs appointment for the 22nd with a new Dr so hopefully he will try something new to get to the bottom of this issue.
  • Oh I forgot to add...I don't think he has bacterial prostatitis because he was on antibiotics for 2 months and it came back again. That is why I am starting to think it is a chronic non bacterial form which is way harder to diagnose and treat. It has been ongoing to about 5 years and it just comes and goes. :(
  • My husband had chronic prostatitis and epidymitis for over a year. It got better for awhile after antibiotics, then would come back again. He took several different antibiotics and finally had to break out the big guns, doxycycline, to finally get rid of it. His SA at the time came back as "normal" in terms of count, motility, and morphology.

It wasn't until our first visit with an RE that it was noted that the results indicated a higher than normal pH. The prostate provides 30% of the ejaculatory fluid, so problems can cause increased pH, thicker than normal ejaculate, and decreased motility.  We decided on IUI's to eliminate that problem, but no luck yet. His follow-up SA after the antibiotics was normal. I also have borderline DOR, so that may be a factor.

I would encourage you to make sure his MD is treating it aggressively and with the proper antibiotics. It wouldn't hurt to get a SA now to see how it is affecting the numbers. Good luck and best wishes for your upcoming wedding!

Thanks so much for the info! We will definitely look into getting a SA sooner than later. I am really glad that we are switching to a new Dr. that will hopefully try something else. Prostatitis sucks! Best of luck with everything.

  • I know this is a super old post but I thought I would update what has happened. So, my now DH apparently only had on kidney which was causing a whole line of issues that mimicked the symptoms of prostatitis. He had surgery to remove a bunch of malfunctioning organs and isn't in pain anymore!!!
