Camera Policy at Hospital?

I was just re-reading over our hospital paperwork last night, and it says no photography during birth or right after.

I don't really care about the during part, but I want some pictures right after, like when DH goes over to check out the baby etc.

What is your hospital policy? Is this normal?

Re: Camera Policy at Hospital?

  • Hmm. I'm not sure about my hospitals policy DURING birth (not interested anyway), but after birth I know it's okay. Within 5 minute of my nephew being born we were all in there taking pictures and holding him. And same hospital as where I'll be.

  • Huh, everyone I know with young kids has pics of the babies being born, being cleaned up and on the scale. My sister has a couple shots of the doc pulling my nephew out of her C-Section.

  • We can't video tape the birth (not that I would), or take pictures during the birth but after the baby is delievered and brought to the warmer we can take pictures.  Ask your doctor when taking pictures can start.

  • Most hospitals won't let you take pics of the birth and right after(such as stitching you up) due to liability issues.

But taking pics of the kid being cleaned up and weighed is usually a-ok.

    This!

  • I will ask at my next appointment as I want pictures of them all "dirty" still!

just found out the policy at our tour on Saturday.

    - still photos are fine anytime - but must be handheld (no tripods)

    - video is allowed once the baby is out (also must be handheld)

  • How odd.  I would never have thought of this.  I'll have to be sure to ask at my appointment next Monday...

  • I'm actually not sure about that. I'll have to ask.
  • Ours is the same...no photos or videos during and immediately after the birth.  They are trying to prevent you from gathering evidence you could use against them in a malpractice lawsuit.  Once the baby is out and they are done with the "procedures" you can take pictures.

  • We took pictures right after each of my kids were born.  I think that rule is completely ridiculous.  I would like to video tape this one, but I don't know what the policy is.  I think a woman in labor should get to say if she wants pictures taken.  I just don't see what the big deal is.

  • I've never heard of a hospital with a policy about right after birth. Ours says no cameras during birth, but we took pics of DD about a minute after she was born.

Maybe see what their definition of "right after" is? Not sure if they mean seconds after, or if maybe after the baby is cleaned up and seems to be doing ok you can take pics.

  • Talk to your dr. He might give you permission.

i was present when my cousin had her baby last oct.  She videoed her last two childbirths & that was to be my job.  Nurse said it was a hospital policy not to allow taping.  I flipped the camera on immediately after he came out (I was actually pretty impressed with my camera in one hand, video in the other skills), and the doc. asked why I hadn't video'd the birth.  The doc can override the rules.  They exist for medmal protection.

  • It's normal.  It's to cover their butts if they make a mistake so you can't sue them.  You'd have photographic evidence.  Blah, Blah, Blah.  I don't like this rule.
  • Something tells me that they have had trouble with people physically getting in the way right after when they have stuff to do - important stuff. So, from that POV I understand. Still - I expect to have a pic w/ the baby pretty soon after.
