Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

14 month - early 15 month old babies do yours understand commands?

I am amazed daily how much he understands its like every single day literally hes "teaching us" what hes learned.  this  morning while DH was sleeping we were sitting in bed he stroked DHs hair and said  "nice" we couldnt believe it.  We always tell him that with the cats its like the light bulb went on. LOL  So how are others doing at this stage.  He does the following at 14 1/2 months.  If we say the following commands to him.

Like - bring me your ball?

        Dont touch?

Lets go brush our teeth? and they can get their toothbrush/toothpaste?

       Place that in the garbage?

Can i have that (specific item) please?

       Hand me a (specific utensil)?

TIA.

  • If I ask him for a certain thing, like "bring me that ball" sometimes he'll do it and sometimes he won't. Kind of like "where's your hair or where's your belly?" sometimes he'll touch it and sometimes he won't. I think he understands it every time, but sometimes he just refuses to do it.

But I can say "let's go upstairs and change your diaper" and he'll run to the stairs. Same thing with "are you sleepy?" or "do you want a nap?" And if I ask if he's hungry, and he is, he runs to his high chair and drags it out.

  • It is amazing how much she understands, and how much I can get her to do just by asking.  She does most of what your DS does.  Her new favourite is running to the sink when you say 'wash your hands please'.  I love that I don't have to re-direct her as much anymore.

Same thing, I'm just amazed when I say something and he actually follows it. Like usually I just say it for my benefit and think it's just good practice for him to hear the words. It's awesome to see him put something away or not touch a drawer when I tell him not to.

We were just talking about this the other day.  She understands everything we say.  She doesn't always do what we're asking, but she definitely knows what's going on.

The other day, she was trying to stand up but couldn't because her leg was caught in her pants.  I said "are you stuck?" and she answered "I stuck.  I stuck."

  • For the most part DS understands commands, but he doesnt do them 100% of the time. I would say probably 90-95% of the time.
  • DD isn't quite this age, but she clearly understands commands. Just yesterday she was trying to crawl with a cookie in her hand so I said, "Why don't you stand up and walk to Mommy?" (she just started walking a week ago). So, she went to the fridge to stand up and walked right over.

She can also: point to things when asked, "Where is ____?," "Bring me ____," "Do you need a new diaper?" will get a yes/no response and if yes, she will head towards her room...

She also understands, "What's next?" as in: dinner is over: "Lia, what does Mommy do next" Her answer: Diaper ~ as I'm taking care of that I'll ask, "What's next Lia?" Answer: Bath...

Though I miss my tiny bug, I love that she can communicate!

  • Yes, DS follows commands too. (In Swedish and English.) Give me a hug/kiss, roll me the ball, give me that toy/book, go show Daddy/Mommy in the other room your toy, go get a specific toy in the other room, etc.

It's nice to see that their little minds are working!  :)
