You could have the best of both worlds. It's Russian. It means love or something. She told me once, but that was an evening with wine so I might be mistaken...

Funny that you mention that. I like Melena a lot but my dad is Melvin and my mom thinks that is too similar. Jews don't name for people that are alive it's like a jinx. Sooo, I am trying to name for my grandfather Max, without being too similar to my mom Myra or my dad Melvin. Makes life very difficult, can't use Miranda,Maya, Melanie, Melena, etc. I don't really think it's that similar if you use Lainey as a nn, but I really really want my mom to feel happy with this name. I know I don't have to, but I want to. It's her first grandchild and she is 70, so who knows if there will be any others. Sorry for the long winded explanation.

I like Marissa. It's pretty and not too common. I also like Mara. I know what you mean about trying to avoid names that sound like parent names. We're having the same problem.

I was going to suggest this too. I like this better than Marissa. I think it sounds more elegant on an adult.
For those that like the name Melena....do you realize that's the term for black, bloody stool? Yes, poop. Bloody poop.
Please don't name a baby after bloody poo!
Wow, you are absolutely right! I am a doctor and I didn't even think of that, since it pronounced differently. Thanks for pointing it out.
Melissa, again, too close to my Dad's name. Maxine, thought of it, like it, not loving it but it's in the running with Lily was mn. Matilda, LOVE it (Matilda Ruby) , DH not so much. Still could be in the running, especially you know at that moment after I give birth! . Just trying out Marissa for a while. He came up with Delaney for a mn which I am really liking. Margarita is my SIL's name, pretty but I am not naming baby after her either. Maeve, Mavis, nms. Thanks all, Why is this so HARD??????

It's ok but it's not a favourite. is your Gradnfather still alive? Would you consider Maxine?
What about Margaret, Michaela, Mavis, Matilda, ?Miranda, Milicent, Miriam
Elizabeth 5yrs old Jane 3yrs old
Oops missed the bit where you said Miranda was out.
I really like the nn Maggie, Millie and Tilly for Margharet, Milicent and Matilda, respectively.

I really like it.
Marissa's just okay to me.

I like Marissa. It's not really my style..but it's cute, normal and spelled right...so I do like it.
Have you considered Melissa if you're looking for an M name...that's my favorite name of the week!
I like Marissa but it seems a bit 80/90s to me --but I do like it.
My favorite M names are Maren and Maeve
I also like Mallory but realize it's 80s as well and it doesn't have a great meaning but I still like it and think Mallie is a cute nn.

I see your reasoning.
What about Mariska? Like Mariska Hargitay who's on Law and Order?
Marissa is too 80's for my taste.
What about Madeleine (or Madeline)?
