What do yall think of Karys? I was working with DH at a high school today (selling class rings) and a girl came up with that name...I thought it was interesting/cute! It's pronounced Care-iss.??

I like it but prefer it spelled Carys (like Catherine Zeta Jones spells her daughter's name).

  • It's interesting. It reminds of of Rhys, a boy name ?I like but I am not sure I would really use. ?

  • I like it okay, but it has always sounded a little too much like "caress" to me.
  • I like it- but I like Carys better than Karys.?

  • Before I read how to pronounce it I thought it was pronounced "Cars". Its NMS.

    Me too?

  • I love it, but also prefer Carys.
  • Any name that requires a pronunciation guide is going to be a lifelong pain in the butt for everyone.
  • nms, it would be mispronounced often.
  • I like it. I've never seen it w/ a K. The traditional Welsh spelling is Carys. I also would pronounce it CAH-iss, like Half or Bath, which is closer to the traditional pronuonciation, not CARE -iss, like Hair. I think that is a regional thing.

Actually, the traditional Welsh pronounciation is Care-iss.  My DH is Welsh (as in, lived in Wales until we met) and he confirmed that for me.

I love the name and I don't think you'd have all that many problems with pronounciation.  I would still with the correct spelling of Carys, though.

Wow, that shocks me. I've never heard anyone from the UK pronounce anything w/ the "air" pronunciation, as in Caroline, Harrison, Larry, etc... A lot of Americans say those names in that nasally, CARE oline, HAIR-y, LAIR-y, etc... rather than Cah-roline, like the A in Hat, not Hair. Or they'll rhyme the word marry w/ the name Mary. Yuck.  The only time I have ever heard an English or Irish person say those names that way is if they are mocking the American accent! lol. Also, I had looked it up to be sure, but I guess my source was wrong!
