Question about HSHHC

Ok so the guy talks about the fact that now is ok to let your baby "protest" (i.e. CIO) for up to an hour. I honestly could never let DD cry for an hour but the last couple of days I tried letting her cry. When I first put her down (drowsy) she's whines and does a little cry but then after about 4 minutes it turns into a screaming-choking-on-spit-momma-come-get-me-NOW kind of cry. Should I still let her cry when she's crying that hard? I don't think I read anything about how hard to let them cry in HSHHC. But maybe I missed that chapter.

    I just started putting K down in her crib 3 nights ago.  The first night, she cried for about 5 minutes, fell asleep, then woke up after about a minute and cried again for a few minutes.  When she got to the point of screaming bloody murder, I went in and patted her back.  If that wouldn't have worked, I would have picked her up.  I just can't let her lay there and scream, it hurts too much. 

    The second night, she only cried for a few minutes then went to sleep.  Tonight, she wimpered about 2 second and promptly fell asleep.
