Parenting after a Loss

9 month pedi appointment

All in all it went well. ?Ethan is still a tiny little guy, but that is nothing new. ?He weighed in at a whopping 17.1lbs and is the 5% percentile for weight. ?Doc wants me back again in 6 weeks for a weight check and told me to start giving him a little oil or butter with every solids meal..olive oil or whatever. ?He said it had extra calories and would help put some pounds on him. ?Other than that he is developing normally.

Re: 9 month pedi appointment

  • Glad everything went well.

Sophia goes for her 9 month appt. on May 5th - even though she'll be almost 9.5 months old then.

  • Glad the appointment went well.

Hmm... Ben weighed 17 lbs 10 oz at his 9 month apointment last week (10th %) and the doc didn't seem too worried.  And Ben had dropped down from the 20-25th percentile.  I wonder if I should worry?

  • Hmm.. I guess I don't understand bringing babies back for weight check after weight check when it is clear they are just little.. I have the same issue with Eve.. I thought for sure we were going to have to go for another weight check since she'd only gained 1.5 lbs in a month.. but thankfully we don't. Not sure I understand the oil/butter to fatten him up though either.. don't we just want them to grow? Not get fat? I mean I guess it is the same thing as them having me eat ice cream to get Eve to gain weight..  I love my skinny girl though

  • if he is steadily gaining weight, why do you need to give him butter/oil? andrew has always been in the 5-10% for weight, and the pedi has never been concerned. i like my little man!

    glad everything went ok tho!

  • glad it went well

my friend had to do that with her son - constantly giving him butter on everything and avocados, etc but he wasn't even on the weight charts - he is 2.5 now and still not on the charts but still fine otherwise.

  • Glad to hear things are OK overall.  I'm a little worried what Evie's weight will be by her 9 month appt.  Good to know they at least had some suggestions to help w/that!
  • I don't think the oil will make him fat, its just to get extra calories in him: carbs have 4 calories while fats have 9....also the issue isn't that he's small, its that he is still dropping percentiles. ?4 months he was 25%, 6 months was 10%, weight check after that was 10% and now he's down to 5%. ?Ugh.

I'll do what the pedi recommends, its obviously clear that he's just a little guy, but I don't want him to get labeled "failure to thrive" or something horrible like that.
