Trying to Get Pregnant

SA questions

So I know that many of your DH have had to do this.  I have a few questions.

1. How much did it cost?

2.  Did Insurance cover it?  If so how much?

3.  If insurance didn't do your health savings account or flex cover it?

4..  How long did it take to get results?

5.  What type of facility did you go to?  IE urologist or infertility center

I thought that this would be a thing covered by insurance, but apparently not the place that DH is supposed to go.  I'm just wondering what your experience is.

Re: SA questions

  • About $350.00

Yes, insurance covered both of them

You have to check your plan.

    3-5 days for us

First one was done through my gyno, second one through RE.

  • My insurance covered it as part of my appt co pay for seeing my doctor--nothing additional.  We have had 2, one we dropped off at a hospital lab and they reported their results to my doc.  The second my DH did in my doc's (RE) office in their well equiped special room.

  • So the fact that this place we are supposedly being sent that does NOT accept insurance isn't normal.  I'd rather not have to pay out of pocket if I can help it.
  • Call your insurance company.  Mine paid a non-participating place because my participating doctor wrote the script and that's the only location available in our area.

  • You have to check your insurance to see if it is covered or not.  If it is and the place you are supposed to go to doesn't take insurances, either find another place or submit for reimbursement from your insurance company.

  • Our insurance covered all of them, so they cost us about $4 or something. They were all done at infertility labs. One was ordered by DH's PCP, and we got the results in the mail a couple of days later. One was ordered by a urologist, and we never got the results. The last one was ordered by the fertility clinic we went to, and the doctor called a couple days later with the results.
  • We're with Kaiser and it was free at their in-house lab. If not your insurance co., your HSA should cover it...since it covers other "voluntary" health things.

For us the first SA was done wrong (go Kaiser!), and they apparently left the sample sitting for quite a while before it was looked at. They gave us a 48-hour turnaround time for results, but unfortunately DH has to go back for round two.

Also, the first time they neglected to tell him he should abstain from "releasing" any semen for 3 days prior to the SA, so now we're waiting until after my fertile window before he goes back.
