1st Trimester

Colace = FAIL

So, I've been constipated for about a week and a half now... NOT FUN! ?I was so excited when my doc told me that I could take colace, a stool softener. ?Well... ?I have had NO relief. ?

I'm going to call this morning and ask what else I can do... ?Any suggestions? ?I'm desperate here! ?

TIA:)?

Re: Colace = FAIL

  • When did you take it? It takes like 2 days to get things moving for me..
  • Loading the player...
  • how many doses did you take so far? ?I know that the stool softener they gave me when after I had Layla did not work immediately, but it did work after a day or so (I think.. ) and it was easy.?

Metamucil is on my recommended list also. ?

  • Fiber one products seem to be the staples in everyone's diet.  Just eat like three bowls of cereal, it won't be fun because the gas pains will KILL you, but it will surely move things out.

  • Apples or apple juice, a cup of coffee, or prunes?

  • Fiber.

    Fiber.

    More fiber.

  • Benefiber! It's a miracle cure. I've lived on it since 1st tri last time... so over a year ;)

    1-2 tsp 3xs a day.... AAAAAAAMazing ;)

  • When I took Colace for constipation with my 1st, I had to drink a ton of water with it in order to get things moving.  My doc recommended this to me and mentioned that Colace can have the opposite effect if you don't drink a ton of fluids while taking it.

  • Colace does not work quick, especially if you are already backed up. My doctor told me to take one Colace with each meal three times a day. That combined with my fiber one bars and Kashi cereal got things moving.

  • Fiber One products and coffee worked for me.

  • What dose did you take? I usually take 2 and have a bowel movement in about 24 hours. It takes time to work!

Black coffee can get things moving along quickly. Increasing your fiber intake and water consumption will help over the long haul.

  • Colace is a stool softener and it works by drawing water into your bowels to soften your stool which in turn will hopefully allow it to move easily.  As a PP said, you need to make sure you are thoroughly hydrated to allow for that water to uptake into your bowels.  It's not a stimulant laxative so there is no actual contracting that takes place to "move" the bowels and convince the stool to expel.  That being said, one or two doses is not enough especially if you've been backed up for 1 1//2 weeks.  My suggestion would be continue with the Colace and REALLY increase your liquid intake.  Sorry for the discomfort:-(  GL
  • my doctor recommended ratio lactulose.. (i needed a prescription for it) and it works wonders. I take a tablespoon everyday and drink at least 2 bottles of waters. I know the pain of constipation.

I was also told I could take ducolax. I took the ducolax before the lactulose, it got things going quickly but it did give me cramps, which is why I asked my doctor for something else. It's over the counter, but if you take it, take it in the morning and stay home all day. It doesn't cause contractions which is the main concern when taking something for constipation.

I was soo sick that I couldn't eat most foods that would help... I'd thrown up everything from cereal to metamucil. Definatly talk to your doctor.. because after a day or two constipation is worse than all day morning sickness :(

  • Thank you so much ladies!?

?I've been taking 3 tablets a day for 3 days - I haven't taken any yet today. ?I wasn't aware that I needed to increase my fluids so much... ?I'm going to have to start chugging water. ?

I just ate a BIG bowl of fiber one cereal. ?I'm going to go and get some prunes today and of course, WATER WATER WATER!!!

Thanks again for all of the tips and advise.?

  • I have always had constipation problems even before I was pregnant and it got way worse when I got pregnant.  I just started putting a tablespoon of molasses in a cup of tea at night and it's a miracle.  I'm so regular now!  I'm going to the doctor today and I'll mention it...but online it says it's perfectly safe.
  • My doctor told me to take MiraLAX instead of Colace to get things moving better. Someone on here recommended eating two FiberOne bars a day. I looked at the calorie content of these and refused until the other day. Things have been moving through much better the past few days. I've actually pooped each day rather than just once every four days after spending half the day in the bathroom. (sorry for the TMI)
  • Ooh I also put two or three of the Benefiber stick packs in my water per day.

FLAXSEED MEAL - put handfuls in muffins, a couple spoonfuls in your oatmeal. Flaxseed meal is the miracle.

  • As you say, Colace is a stool softner. It is not a laxative. It will keep your constipated bm from becoming hard rock that hurt to pass. Take some fiber supplement with the Colace.

I have to defend my beloved Colace! You are asking it to do somehting that it isn't designed for.

  • I have found a tall glass of Prune juice did the trick for me after colace failed.  I thought it would taste terrible but it wasn't too bad.  I was cleared up after about 4 hours.  GL!

  • my Dr. recommened Milk of Magnesium. It worked wonders! and pretty quickly too. Milk of Mag is ok during pregnancy.

  •

I completely hear wyou with the Colace problem. My doctor recommended milk of magnesia, and it worked well, and pretty fast. I only used it for a couple of days, because it was too "lossening", if you will. Don't mean to be gross, but...you may want to use it on and off as needed. It's safe during pregnancy. Good luck!
